Mentorship: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Contributed by VINner Petra Kos, DVM, this Diary of a New Grad is "... a story written for new grads and soon-to-be new grads, who have had, are having, or will have, trouble finding the support every newly-minted veterinarian needs to succeed." Follow Petra's experiences as she learns that sometimes you can do all the right things looking for your first position and it still doesn't turn out as planned. But with a little help from friends, it will usually turn out OK. ________________________ Speaking of Mentorship... Retired doesn't mean 'put out to pasture' on VIN! VIN can help you make a positive difference to the next generation of veterinarians. Sign up for the Adopt-a-Vet program today and share your knowledge!

Ultrasonographic findings of feline cholangitis
Most cats with cholangitis had sonographically normal liver size, echogenicity, and normal biliary systems. Statistically significant sonographic changes for cats with cholangitis included hyperechoic liver parenchyma, hyperechoic gallbladder contents, and increased pancreatic size. No statistically significant changes were noted to distinguish lymphocytic and neutrophilic forms of cholangitis.
Canine immune-mediated polyarthritis: Part 1: Pathophysiology
Immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA) is a common disease process in the dog.(1) The immune-mediated polyarthropathies are divided into two major categories: erosive (or deforming) and nonerosive (or nondeforming). Understanding the pathophysiology of the immune attack on affected joints is paramount in choosing the most effective therapy for managing canine IMPA.
Pharyngeal mucoceles in dogs: 14 cases
Forty-three percent of the dogs had a cervical mucocele on the same side as the pharyngeal mucocele. Surgical therapy was performed in 13 dogs, which consisted of excision of the mandibular and sublingual salivary glands, excision of the mucocele, or marsupulization of the mucocele. Only two dogs had recurrence of the pharyngeal mucocele. In this study, pharyngeal mucoceles occurred in predominantly small dogs that frequently presented with respiratory signs. Surgical treatment was successful in most dogs.

Ivermectin obtained from compounding pharmacy was too concentrated and killed a patient
I have a very sad story about one of my favorite patients that died due to a compounding error by a compounding pharmacy I have trusted for over 6 years. This pharmacy compounded a refill of heartworm preventative as 136 MG ivermectin (with pyrantel) rather than 136 MCG ivermectin. He had been getting heartworm preventative compounded from this pharmacy for 2 years (due to his PLE). He hung on in ICU for over a week but finally succumbed to complications (aspiration pneumonia).
Paperless practices and medical notations: How soon must a record be completed?
Our practice is working toward chartless, i.e. paperless. One of our questions is whether or not there is an acceptable time period for leaving medical notes templates open, i.e. changeable, where we may be able to go back and edit or add to them. We know they must be finalized at some point. What are people generally doing--is it up to individual discretion?
What qualifies as a library as far as accreditation in Canada; website with Ontario's standards
I am currently appealing a decision of my provincial licencing board that disallowed VIN to satisfy my statutory requirement to have a library in the hospital. I need to have 1 textbook published in the last 3 years with respect to medicine or surgery. My assertion is that this membership should satisfy that requirement. The objection by the accreditation committee is that there is no guarantee that the material here is peer reviewed.

Heads up Ariel likes to escape her nemesis by climbing up onto the highest shelf in our master closet. I usually don't know she's even up there until I walk in, turn the light on, and get a friendly chortle from up there. Ariel is very skittish, especially around my husband, and when she first started doing it I would hear a high-pitched scream, a yowl, a thud, and the thunder of a cat racing by on almost daily basis. Whenever he'd go into the closet she'd freak out and jump, and he'd have flying cat coming at his head and they'd both scream.
