Extended-Release Liposomal Opioids for Treating Pain in Dogs
Our group, at the University of Wisconsin's School of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with chemists at the University of Wisconsin's School of Pharmacy, has been developing novel liposome-encapsulated formulations of both oxymorphone and hydromorphone. We have shown that a single dose of liposomal oxymorphone provided therapeutic serum concentrations of drug for three days in healthy dogs. Currently, our laboratory is focusing on pharmacokinetic studies in dogs, rats, and nonhuman primates.

Detection of Novel Papillomaviruses in Canine Mucosal, Cutaneous and in situ Squamous Cell Carcinomas
Papillomavirus DNA was discovered in 21% of the tested SCC samples. Interestingly, the classical canine oral papillomavirus was amplified from only one sample, while the other positive cases were associated with a variety of thus far unknown papillomaviruses.

Efficacy of Topical Administration of Eprinomectin for Treatment of Ear Mite Infestation in Six Rabbits
Clinical improvement was seen within 3 days of the first application; however, complete recovery of clinical signs and elimination of mites in 5/6 rabbits did not occur until the end of the study. Results of this trial indicated that eprinomectin was partially effective in the treatment of psoroptic mange in rabbits.

Palliative Intracavitary Carboplatin Therapy in a Cat with Suspected Pleural Mesothelioma
Following complete drainage of the thoracic cavity under ultrasound guidance, 180 mg/m2 carboplatin diluted in 60 ml sterile water was infused into the pleural space (30 ml in each hemithorax). This resulted in complete resolution of clinical signs for 34 days (having required thoracocentesis on four occasions in the preceding 4 weeks). The procedure was repeated using 200 mg/m2 carboplatin, and there was a further 20-day period where the cat was free of clinical signs.

Greyhound Anesthesia
But it's important to give the induction drugs to effect; that way you give what they need. In my opinion, Greyhounds can tend to be stressed and nervous in the clinic, and if they aren't sedate after their premeds they will take more induction agent, but if they're sedate, I haven't noticed them taking more.

What Dog Breed Would You Suggest for an Autistic Child?
I have a client whose son is a 'high functioning autistic'. She wants to get him a dog. Does anyone have any breed suggestions for autistic children?

Seventy-Two Dental Procedures Per Veterinarian Per Year?? Not me! How Do I Get There?
Somehow your clients aren't getting convinced of the need of the procedure. I use phrases like "pain" and "infection" regularly when I talk to clients about dental disease. And progression of periodontal disease leads to tooth loss and pain.

Referral Center Recommends that GDV Dogs be Stabilized and Gastropexy Done 5 Days Later - Why?
The clinician there reported that they never perform surgery on day 1 for GDV. They proposed 5 days for stabilization before performing a gastropexy.
