Get to the Heart of Cardiac Auscultation and Phonocardiography
Though widely used, cardiac auscultation can be hard to learn and gain confidence in without help. Some help can be found in the online version of Cardiac Auscultation and Phonocardiography. And on VIN, it's FREE.

The text and library of accompanying sound recordings will aid your interpretation of normal and abnormal heart sounds and PCGs and may help with your everyday workup of cardiac cases. Look for the sound-players located throughout the text.

How to Establish a Blood Bank
Establishing a blood bank can ensure that there is an available supply of blood, plasma, and platelets sufficient to meet a clinic’s transfusion needs. Wondering where to begin?

VIN consultant Dr. Sally Lester (with videos by Dr. Joe Musielak) has created a Blood Banking Manual to help you answer this question. Thanks Sally (and Joe)!

Find the Blood Banking Manual in the Books section of the VIN Library and in the Hematology & Emergency Medicine Specialty Centers.

New Video Uploader for Message Boards
Thanks to the VIN Geeks, you no longer have to email your video to VIN staff and wait for it to be posted for you - now you can upload your own videos to the message boards and be automatically subscribed to the discussion.

Uploading a video is as easy as uploading an image. Learn how.

At this time, there is still a delay between your uploading the video and the video being available to view. You will receive an email when it is available. This delay will be removed when this new feature is deemed ready for all VINners (not just on BETA.vin.com). Hopefully this won't take too long :)

Beta.vin.com helps speed the testing and release of new features which are destined for VIN.com.

If you want the latest and greatest and want to be on the "bleeding edge" of where VIN is going, make Beta.vin.com your VIN Homepage.

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of primary care physicians in the Franche-Comte region (France) regarding the risk of rabies
Responses to the seven clinical situations showed that most of them did not know the precise indication for the rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin. Primary care physicians are usually aware of the risk of rabies, but their knowledge of how to manage rabies exposure and prevention often requires updating.

Free Full Text

An intact bitch that had been on a bones and raw foods diet since birth showed no signs of estrus despite a 40-day course of cabergoline. Change in diet and treatment with oral cabergoline resulted in signs of proestrus in 13 days, pregnancy, and normal birth of 5 puppies.

Partial parasagittal patellectomy: a novel method for augmenting surgical correction of patellar luxation in four cats
We report a novel surgical technique - partial parasagittal patellectomy - to address the wide shape of the feline patella relative to the sulcus. This technique has been successfully performed in four cats with good outcomes. However, the immediate risks and long-term effects of partial parasaggital patellectomy are not known.

Likelihood Of Garlic/Onion Poisoning; Is Garlic More Toxic Than Onion?
When it comes to Allium species, the stronger the odor/flavor, the more toxic it is. The intensity is related to the sulfide levels, so a 'hot' (strong) white onion is more toxic than a sweet (mild) Vidalia onion, and garlic is much more toxic than either.

When Should A Puppy That Started Heartworm Preventative At Five Months Of Age Have Its First Heartworm Test?
Heartworm preventatives kill third and fourth stage larvae. They are used monthly because the third and fourth stage larvae are running around in the dog's body for at least that long.

When Should I Start Oral Or Inhaled Glucocorticoids For A Young Coughing Cat With A Bronchial Pattern?
This two year old cat has presented for two asthmatic attacks that were a year apart. What frequency of asthmatic attacks warrants the initiation of inhalant therapy?

Does Depression Occur In Shelter Dogs?
Because some of the diagnostic criteria for clinical depression (feelings of worthlessness, excessive or inappropriate guilt, and recurring thoughts of death or suicide) cannot be applied to non-human animals (at least not at this point), we can't say that animals are clinically depressed.

Older Vets, Biggest Personal Changes In Practicing
So as the age creeped in, my patience crept out. I still am in full control and I haven't gone ballistic on anybody or any pet. If I ever do that I'l quit that day.

So, you DVMs who have been at it for decades, what personal changes (not in the medicine here) have you seen in yourselves?
