Clinical Pathology CE: Do Veterinarians and Clinical Pathologists Agree on What's Important to Teach?
Sometimes it seems there's a conflict between what practitioners want to learn and what specialists think practitioners need to learn. Join Jennifer Brazzell, DVM, MVetSc, MRCVS, DACVP this Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. to discuss the results of a recent survey that provides a closer look at where the disconnect is and why it exists.
*This session will also feature audio. Take the readiness test before attending.

Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD): Identifying the Genes Responsible
Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

Noa Safra, DVM, PhD, at UC Davis is conducting this study to investigate the chromosomal regions associated with HOD. The goal is to identify the genetic basis of this disease and to use selective breeding to hopefully reduce the number of HOD puppies.

Check the clinical trials page to see if any of the ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

Crazy things pet owners do

So, as I was taking my cake out of the dishwasher (yes, you read that right), it occurred to me that pet owners do odd things. I'll start:

My cats will get into ANY food that's out. They are worse than any dog I've ever had. I have to put 2 in their room just to bring in/put away groceries, let alone cook or eat my own meal in peace. You can't cool a cake in the oven. Can't leave it out. So... I put pot-holders on top of the dishwasher prongs and place the cake pans on those. I can close the door and there is a vent, so voila! Cooled cake without foot prints or bite marks.

Updates in small animal cardiopulmonary resuscitation
For dogs and cats that experience cardiopulmonary arrest, rates of survival to discharge are 6% to 7%, as compared with survival rates of 20% for people.

The efficacy of anthelmintic drugs against nematodes infecting free-ranging eastern grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus
Moxidectin and ivermectin had low efficacy with maximum fecal egg count (FEC) reductions of 82% and 28%, respectively. However, treatment with albendazole reduced FECs by 100% in all kangaroos, and egg counts remained low for up to 3 months.

Effect of body position on electrocardiographic recordings in dogs
Right lateral recumbency improves the quality of ECG recording in dogs by decreasing muscle tremor artefact, alters the amplitude of P, R, and S waves in specific leads, and results in a rightward shift in the mean electrical axis, relative to standing.

Feline Ear Polyps (Photographs); Video Of Polyp Removal
I actually find a greater number of other tumors in the ear that at first glance look like polyps, but in fact are mural masses. It is important to be sure they are free polyps before you try to blindly grab them.

Managing Diabetic Cats: Recommendations For Diet, Insulin Administration, And Blood Glucose Testing
I tell owners not to be frightened of the lower-cost grocery store foods like Fancy Feast Classic. They work very well in many diabetics, and most importantly, are palatable to many of them.

Pug Dog With Cutaneous Mast Cell Tumor (MCT): What Is Prognosis If Surgical Margins Are Less Than 2-3 Centimeters?
Not all mast cell tumors extend 2-3 cm beyond what is visible. Some experts now advocate graduated margin widths depending on the tumor grade. In one study, at 1 cm margins, 75% of the grade II mast cell tumors and 100% of the grade I mast cell tumors were considered "completely" excised.

      Vet school interview advice
The young woman who has been shadowing me for several years has gotten interviews at Iowa State and University of Minnesota. Yay! She's asked for practice interview questions.

My interviews were in 1985... I remember being asked some ethics questions, some basic animal knowledge questions, some questions about my interests, expectations, etc. I didn't do any practice interviews and I don't remember being coached or counselled much by my instructors. Are things much different now? I would love to hear from recent grads or those still in school about what she might expect.
