  • Information on animal care and husbandry
  • Recognition and treatment of diseases
  • Management/personnel issues
  • Legal and regulatory issues

As a Matter of FAQ...
The fastest route to an answer to your question is a VIN Database Search. But, because some topics have been discussed many times on the message boards, the number of "hits" can be overwhelming.

To help you, the VIN consultants (and other experts) continue to create up-to-date summaries (FAQs) of topics commonly discussed on the message boards.

Save time and check out the Medical FAQs before you post.

Severe cardiovascular depression in a cat following a mandibular nerve block with bupivacaine
This clinical report describes successful management of cardiovascular and neurological complications following a mandibular nerve block with bupivacaine in a cat.

Possible behavioral effects of exogenous corticosteroids on dog behavior: A preliminary investigation
In all, 11 owners reported behavioral changes in their dogs; 9 dogs were reported to show more than one behavioral change. Six dogs reportedly showed nervousness and/or restlessness, 3 showed an increase in startle responses, 3 showed food guarding, 2 showed a decrease in their activity level, 3 showed an increase in avoidance responses, 4 showed irritable aggression, and 2 dogs increased barking.

Validation of a cranial injection technique of the medial femorotibial joint in the horse
When an 'average size' of horse is used with or without joint effusion, the cranial technique is successful in entering the medial femorotibial joint in approximately 50% of cases, and may hence be of use in a fractious animal without sedation, a stallion, or in the presence of a wound/skin infection at the site of the medial needle entrance.

Treatment options for dog with protein-losing nephropathy, acute renal failure, and aortic thrombus (photographs)
Very cool pictures. Obviously, there is a huge infarct on the cranial pole of the kidney and a huge thrombus in the aorta. In cats, these are thought to always be thromboemboli that originate in the left atrium; in dogs, we believe these are thrombi that form in the aorta.

Why we should worry about the pharmacy act requiring us to provide written prescriptions
Frankly, I am annoyed that I am hearing from the AVMA and FVMA about the Fairness to Pet Owner's Act, and others spending time saying that Rimadyl is at WalMart, or 800Petmeds is cutting into our flea/tick business. We are not pharmacists and most of us didn't go into veterinary medicine with the intent of running a pet store. We are doctors!!!

High prevalence of chronic splenic torsion and icterus in market hogs (photographs)
How often do you all see splenic torsions in post-mortem exams on swine in the field? We see them regularly at the plants (I would estimate we see a couple of dozen per day at our plant, in various states of decay), yet I've never heard mention of this being a problem in swine. At least, not in school, in textbooks, etc. -- and I can't find a mention of it on VIN, either. Typically, there's nothing abnormal seen on antemortem, just found incidentally on the post-mortem exam.

Get the camera!
My sister has a very fat cat who likes to drink out of the toilet. She also has young children getting potty-trained. She came home one afternoon to find very-fat-cat laying in the middle of hall with children's toilet seat stuck around its middle. Worst part is she didn't think to grab the camera and instead decided to rescue the cat.
