Considering an Internship/Mentorship?
Well-mentored internships can help prepare new graduates for residency or certification, and ease the transition from student to practicing veterinarian.

Whether you're a potential mentor or mentee, you'll find useful information on VIN.

Disinfectant choices in veterinary practices, shelters and households: ABCD guidelines on safe and effective disinfection for feline environments
Deficiency of the enzyme UDP-glucuronosyl transferase renders the cat susceptible to the toxic effects of phenol-based disinfectants (including many essential oils), so these should be avoided in feline environments. Quaternary ammonium compounds (e.g., benzalkonium chloride) are also probably best avoided.

Perioperative red blood cell transfusion requirement for various surgical procedures in dogs: 207 cases (2004-2013)
Results indicated that dogs undergoing splenectomy and liver lobectomy may require RBC transfusion perioperatively.

Streptococcal infections in cats: ABCD guidelines on prevention and management
It was traditionally assumed that this bacterium played no role in disease of cats, but it is now considered a cause of respiratory disease with bronchopneumonia and pneumonia, as well as meningoencephalitis, often with a fatal course.

Surgical Options For A Cat That Has An Obstructing Ureterolith And Possible Pyelonephritis
Subcutaneous ureteral bypasses are easier to place (not being a surgeon) than doing ureterotomies. If the stone is farther down the ureter, then ureteral resection and neo-uretero-cystostomy is an option.

Nasal Hydropulsion Was Used To Diagnose Cat That Had Unilateral Nasal Discharge
My turkey-wrangling skills have improved greatly in the last several months!

Is Flushing Via Drain Recommended For Cat That Has A Dog Bite Wound?
I do not recommend flushing anything into a drain. The indication for the use of a wound drain is to decrease or minimize dead space and allow for tissue layer apposition.

Disposal Of Empty Isoflurane Bottles; Laws Regulating Disposal Of Hazardous Waste And Residues
Our hazardous waste disposal company is telling us that we cannot throw our empty isoflurane bottles in the trash or recycling. They want us to send the bottles to them for disposal -- for a fee, of course. Is this correct?

Frustration with Employee Bickering
You're not their mother nor their counselor nor their friend. You're their boss. It is entirely up to you what kind of work environment you have. It is a shame that it has gotten this far that your family time is being affected. That is absolutely unacceptable and it stops immediately, but only if you follow through.
