Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy (HOD): Identifying the Genes Responsible
Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

Noa Safra, DVM, PhD, at UC Davis is conducting this study to investigate the chromosomal regions associated with HOD. The goal is to identify its genetic basis and hopefully help reduce the number of HOD puppies through selective breeding.

Check the clinical trials page to see if any of the ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

I am not her son...

"An older lady came in with her cat and her son because she said the cat was having a hard time seeing and its tail was down. Our other doctor saw her and recommended flea treatment and a dental COHAT for this obese cat. A few days later the owner returned to complain about her treatment at our clinic. The son quietly took a piece of clinic stationary and wrote the following:

"Make her happy. Keep the cat overnight and make her !HAPPY! I am not her son. I am a family friend and part time caregiver. !HELP ME! I am so sorry."

We could hardly keep a straight face. We kept the cat overnight and the owner stiffed us on the bill."

Financial dimensions of veterinary medical education: an economist's perspective
Although the situation is clearly worrisome, viable repayment options exist for these escalating debt loads. In combination with recent income and employment trends for veterinarians, these options provide a basis for cautious optimism for the future.

Polyodontia in donkeys
Polyodontia was recorded in 2.25% of the donkeys, presenting 36 supernumerary teeth, with 2.80% being incisors and 97.20% cheek teeth, with prevalence increasing with age. The caudal aspects of the maxillary cheek teeth rows were the most common locations for supernumerary teeth development (distomolars). The mandible was far less commonly affected than the maxilla.

      Any Running Vets?
"It is amazing how just a couple of months off from running can ruin your endurance. I ran a half marathon 2 months ago, and now running 2-3 miles at a time is a challenge. Regardless, I managed to finish my 5.5K midnight run with just a couple of walk breaks. The time was bad, around 49 min, but I did it! And I think I officially have the running bug again!"
