If one of your New Year's Resolutions is 'Get More from VIN'...
...let us help! With so much information and so many tools to choose from, none of us knows everything about VIN. VIN's two primary functions are: - To bring us together as colleagues
- To provide access to information and tools that make practice more rewarding and fun.
Learn how to use the features and functions VINners use and enjoy most with the ever-expanding Show Me How Video Library. You'll even find tips on minor computer clean up and maintenance tasks like clearing your cache and saving/storing usernames and passwords. New VINners will get a great head start on becoming Master VINners and even long-time VINners are guaranteed to learn a few new tricks! For those of you who learn better with a little personal guidance, enroll in the LIVE 'How To Use VIN' sessions. They take place on the first three Wednesdays of each month at 9:30 p.m. ET. Also, don't miss the 'How To' front page for more great tips and tutorials!
Mentorship: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Contributed by VINner Petra Kos, DVM, this Diary of a New Grad is "... a story written for new grads and soon-to-be new grads, who have had, are having, or will have, trouble finding the support every newly-minted veterinarian needs to succeed." Follow Petra's experiences as she learns that sometimes you can do all the right things looking for your first position and it still doesn't turn out as planned. But with a little help from friends, it will usually turn out OK. ________________________ Speaking of Mentorship... Retired doesn't mean 'put out to pasture' on VIN! VIN can help you make a positive difference to the next generation of veterinarians. Sign up for the Adopt-a-Vet program today and share your knowledge!

Search 3.0 - Better... Faster... Easier
Those are the goals that drove the development of Search 3.0...now available on Beta.vin.com. It is still a little "rough around the edges," but after nearly a year of development and testing and a massive clean-up of the millions of items in the VIN database, Search 3.0 is ready for your feedback: - Narrow your results using filters
- Add or remove filters until you find what you're looking for
- "Best bets" highlight great content specially marked by the VIN indexing team
Want to see how your Search 3.0 results compare to Search 2.0? Click the yellow box that says "Old Search 2.0". Learn about Search 3.0 in this video tutorial. Send feedback to Feedback@vin.com. Better yet, share your feedback, suggestions, critiques with all VINners by posting on the message boards.

Factors affecting dog–dog interactions on walks with their owners
Dog age, dog gender, dog size, human gender, and the use of a leash had a marked effect on dyadic interactions between dogs on walks with their owners.
The early behaviour of cow and calf in an individual calving pen
The decrease in maternal grooming, and the concurrent increase in social behaviour of the calf towards the dam, may illustrate the beginning of a gradual shift from the dam being the initiator of cow–calf contact to the calf being the initiator, while the increase in social behaviour of the cows toward the neighbouring cow on day 11 suggests an increased motivation to associate more with other cows at this stage after calving.
Catastrophic scapular fractures in Californian racehorses: Pathology, morphometry and bone density
Thoroughbred and QH racehorses have a characteristic scapular fracture configuration that is associated with pre-existing pathology of the distal aspect of the spine. This location is consistent with scapular stress fractures diagnosed in lame TB racehorses. Catastrophic fracture is the acute manifestation of a more chronic process. Consequently, there are opportunities for early detection and prevention of fatalities.

New graduate salaries are stagnant or falling; Is practice ownership an alternative for new grads?
This past year the going rate for midwest rural mixed practices was $55-65,000. Rural and small urban companion animal only practices might have been a little higher but probably not too much for starting salary. AVMA average for 2010 grads was $62,327 for mixed, $68,826 for comp an predominate & $71,462 for comp an exclusive. These were across the board averages so rural areas only were probably lower.
Differentials and treatment for failure to thrive kitten with hypocalcemia and hypophosphatemia
I am very concerned about some sort of primary vitamin D metabolism problem with this kitten, but I wonder if all the clinical signs are related or coincidental? I started her on supportive care with fluids and metronidazole and gave her a dose of 20 mg of calcium orally. Within a few hours, she was normothermic, purring, much more lively and eating. Fluid support only? Could the calcium have helped?
Ultrasound and cytological images of a cat with intestinal cryptococcosis
I have a patient that I think I have diagnosed with a severe case of intestinal histoplasmosis that needs help quickly so I thought I would post some images to see if VIN people can help me out before my cytology results are back. The cat is a 12-year-old, F/S Maine Coon that has had mild weight loss (~1lb) over the last few months with a drop in appetite to anorexia in the last couple of weeks. Palpation revealed a large tubular mid-abdominal mass.

Hormonal typo I have an insulinoma dog who is on pred forever. The other day there was a note in my box from the receptionist asking if it was ok to refill the pregnazone. I was wondering if that was the drug you take when you want to experience all the joys of pregnancy without actually being pregnant.
