Colleagues helping colleagues...
... A little bit from a whole bunch of us can make a big difference

On Thursday, October 13, 2011, Don Zantop, DVM, died as a result of an accident while scuba diving in North Carolina with his daughter and friends. Don was a long-time VINner (VIN number 403) and a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. Don dedicated much of his time to the association and advancing avian medicine.

At the request of Don's wife, the VIN Foundation's Stone Soup initiative is accepting donations to be forwarded to the AAV Research Fund in Don's memory. Donations will be accepted until mid-January.

Find out more about the VIN Foundation and other ways you can help your colleagues.

Search 3.0 - Better... Faster... Easier
Those are the goals that drove the development of Search 3.0...now available on Beta.vin.com.

It is still a little "rough around the edges," but after nearly a year of development and testing and a massive clean-up of the millions of items in the VIN database, Search 3.0 is ready for your feedback:

  • Narrow your results using filters
  • Add or remove filters until you find what you're looking for
  • "Best bets" highlight great content specially marked by the VIN indexing team

Want to see how your Search 3.0 results compare to Search 2.0? Click the yellow box that says "Old Search 2.0".

Learn about Search 3.0 in this video tutorial.

Send feedback to Feedback@vin.com. Better yet, share your feedback, suggestions, critiques with all VINners by posting on the message boards.

Risk of suicide in medical and related occupational groups: A national study based on Danish case population-based registers
Crude age- and gender-adjusted rate ratios for suicide compared to teachers were significantly elevated in nurses, physicians, dentists, and pharmacists, but not veterinary surgeons. Risk was also elevated in nurses, physicians, and dentists compared with the rest of the general population, the relative risk increasing following adjustments for psychiatric service contact, marital status, gross income, and labour market status.

Does the taking of biopsies affect the metastatic potential of tumours? A systematic review of reports on veterinary and human cases and animal models
There is no evidence of a general increase in risk of distant metastases in any tumour type in people or animals. The overall risk therefore appears to be negligible when compared to the valuable information obtained from biopsies in veterinary practice.

Chlamydophila felis in cats - Are the stray cats dangerous source of infection?
Out of the 42 positive cats, 25 cats were stray and 17 positive cats were classified as domestic, which means that of 38 stray cats, 25 were positive (which represented 65.78% positivity) and of 55 domestic cats, 17 were positive (positivity was 30.90%). Our results showed that cats, especially stray cats, could be a dangerous source of chlamydiosis for humans.

Goldfish with abdominal distension, edema, and a bubble-like lesion on the head
Removed to hospital tank, salt added, temperature incresed. Fish is anorexic two weeks, listless, laying at bottom of tank. Third week, he begins to pass large amounts of thin stringy feces. I did fecal, did not recover parasites.

Dog with cephalexin-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis
This poor dog has the most severe lesions in its mouth that I have ever seen. The entire mouth is sloughing in great sheets of thickened edematous necrotic tissue - tongue, buccal surface of the lips, hard palate, pharynx.

Neutersol chemical sterilant for male dogs is back on the market as Esterilsol
I worked with Neutersol on a project a few years ago, and we stopped using it completely due to severe side effects. We did injections in a few dozen shelter animals and we had at least 2-3 dogs that developed terrible scrotal/testicular necrosis.

Colleagues working in the same practice qualify for group membership rates! Each practitioner enjoys the benefit of an individual account and personal log-in - maintaining preferences and professionalism - with the added convenience and savings of Group Membership billing.

Remember, there is no such thing as a VIN 'Hospital' membership where all colleagues use the same log-in. Every colleague at every hospital must have their own account/log-in, even if the billing is handled as a group membership within their hospital. (Check out this discussion on the VIN message boards about sharing log-in details.)

This FAQ will explain how group memberships work. If you still have questions contact membership services at vingram@vin.com, or call membership services at 1-800-700-4636 (toll free) or 1-530-756-4881 (locally) or 01 45 222 6154 in the UK.

Hormonal typo
I have an insulinoma dog who is on pred forever. The other day there was a note in my box from the receptionist asking if it was ok to refill the pregnazone. I was wondering if that was the drug you take when you want to experience all the joys of pregnancy without actually being pregnant.
