Improved Format for the CE Main Page
The VIN CE Main page has a different look and feel, but all the familiar stuff is still here. The simplified layout makes it easier and faster to peruse the current and upcoming course offerings on VIN and VSPN all on one handy page!

With the improved design, you can easily see your MyCE console where you can keep track of your current and past CE courses.

There are also quick links to resources that can make your CE experience more enjoyable.

Please take a moment and look around and let us know what you think. If you have any suggestions or comments, your feedback is always appreciated!

Get Your Patients Out of "Time Out"
Is your client troubled by a kitty that pees on her bed? How about a dog that won’t allow you to look him in the eye? Or a cat that attacks his housemate whenever he sees another cat outside the window? Information on all of these problems now resides in the new Behavior Specialty Center.

Learn about therapeutics, behavioral modification, common behavioral issues and helpful websites. You'll also find links to books on VIN, Associate chapters, related journals and proceedings, helpful websites, and client handouts.

A diary of one new grad's experiences -- Sometimes you can do all the right things looking for your first position and it still doesn't turn out as planned. But with a little help from friends, it will usually turn out OK.

Use the VIN Calculators with your mobile device on Beta.vin.com!
The VIN Wizards have been testing many of the VIN calculators extensively on iPad and iPhone and they're now available for mobile device users to try.

These mobile versions allow you to use calculator functions on mobile devices that don’t support Adobe Flash. The VIN geeks will continue tweaking them to make them more user friendly and we'd love your feedback.

Access the calculators and other VIN tools optimized for mobile devices at https://www.vin.com/mobile.

Keep an eye on this section of VIN This Week to find out what new toys you can help perfect on Beta.vin.com.

A survey of owner attitudes and experiences in managing diabetic dogs
In most cases, the clinical condition of the dogs had improved following treatment and owners were largely satisfied with veterinary intervention. Injection of neutral protamine hagedorm twice daily was the most commonly prescribed treatment and respondents found this procedure easy to perform, although it did pose some difficulties when the owners were away from their animals.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and spondylosis deformans in purebred dogs: A retrospective radiographic study
A retrospective radiographic study was performed to investigate the prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and spondylosis deformans (spondylosis) in 2041 purebred dogs and to determine association with age, gender, and breed.

Pharmacokinetics of subcutaneous fentanyl in Greyhounds
Pain occurred on injection in all six dogs, but addition of 8.4% sodium bicarbonate (1mL per 20mL fentanyl) resulted in no pain on injection in 3/3 dogs but similar mean peak concentration values. The subcutaneous route may be an alternative route of fentanyl administration if intravenous administration is not practical.

Prophylactic use of fenbendazole for encephalitozoonosis; detailed overview of E. Cuniculi infections and prevalence in rabbits
We are currently recommending treating all new rabbits with Panacur to rule out E. cuniculi. However, when discussing with a client recently she asked about the potential for reinfection from wild rabbits - is this a problem and would you recommend treating pet rabbits more frequently if there is a high potential for exposure to wild rabbit urine?

Pros and cons of hiring male technicians
For the first time, I'm considering hiring a male technician who's applied for the job. I suppose the point of this post for me, then, is to ask what experiences other women vets in particular have had with male techs? I feel like I need to mix it up a little around here, and that the change in diversity would be beneficial.

How do you handle walk-in clients? Do you charge additional fees for emergencies/walk-ins?
Often we get people who walk in with no appointment or want to be seen because of an "emergency." We charge 25 dollars extra to be seen if there is no scheduled appointment available. The clients always complain even when I explain we are fitting them in and taking time away from other clients and often making my staff stay late.

Open mouth insert foot
A friend from MO sent me a ham for Christmas. I don't eat meat - she forgot. I gave it to a kennel girl. I sent a thank you note to my friend. The next day kennel girl says," You know, that wasn't a ham in there - it was a box of chocolates in a ham box." I'm telling another friend from MO about this, and she says, "My husband and I sent you a box of chocolates in a ham box, did you get them yet?'" So I thanked the wrong friend for a ham she didn't send and joked about giving away the ham box to the one who did send me the gift.
