The physical examination of psittacines and galliformes follows the same basic principles as for small animals. This article includes a step-by-step approach to a distant and hands-on physical exam.

Early detection of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis with artificial intelligence.
The AI identified 169 of the 170 cases prior to their identification by veterinarians, and another 17 cases that remained free of IBK signs (sensitivity = 99.4%, specificity = 97.6%). These results indicate the AI can detect emerging IBK cases by muzzle images very early in the disease process.

Self-Reported Management of Incidentally Detected Heart Murmurs in Puppies: A Survey among Veterinarians.
Data from 452 respondents were analyzed. Though 88% of the respondents find detecting a heart murmur easy, only 9% find differentiating innocent murmurs from pathologic murmurs in puppies easy. Of the respondents, only 80% recommend immediate additional examination when detecting a loud heart murmur during the first veterinary health check at 6 weeks of age. Of the respondents, 31% were uncertain whether early surgical intervention could lead to improved outcomes.

Prevalence of elbow dysplasia in 13 dog breeds in France: a retrospective radiographic study (2002-2022).
The overall prevalence of ED was 11.4%, ranging from 1.1% in the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog to 32.2% in the Dogue de Bordeaux. The Dogue de Bordeaux, Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Cane Corso breeds were most commonly affected by ED. The prevalence of ED was significantly higher in male dogs than in female dogs (17.5% vs 10.5%). Joint incongruity and fragmented coronoid process were the 2 most common primary ED lesions identified.

Performing an Avian Physical Examination in Practice
As with mammalian physical examinations, it is important to develop a consistent order for the avian examination to thoroughly evaluate each body system. Some components of the physical examination differ between avian species. For example, cloacal palpation is performed in chickens, but not in parrots.

Clinical manifestations of chronic pancreatitis in English cocker spaniels.
Affected English cocker spaniels presented with a high frequency of KCS (n = 49), proteinuria (n = 47), anal gland disease (n = 36), atopy (n = 21), and other immune-mediated diseases (n = 16). Those with parti-color hair coats, particularly blue roan, had a strong association with chronic pancreatitis, suggesting a link between coat color and autoimmune conditions in this breed.
