Abstract

Kidney disease causes morbidity and mortality in dogs and cats. Serum creatinine concentration is an important surrogate marker for glomerular filtration rate (GFR). However, it is not always sensitive to small decreases in kidney function. Efforts to identify additional, more sensitive surrogate markers of GFR to improve detection of early kidney disease has led to the use of symmetrical dimethylarginine (SDMA) in veterinary medicine. There is insufficient information about the behavior of creatinine after an increase and the expected behavior of creatinine and SDMA in these cats and dogs. This study assesses the probability of persistence of increases in creatinine and the subsequent behavior of creatinine and SDMA in animals with persistently increased creatinine. For enrollment, three paired SDMA and creatinine concentrations were required: baseline (T0) with creatinine and SDMA at or below the upper reference limit (URL), T1, and T2 0.5-18 months after T1. The study included 4517 cats and 4576 dogs with increased T1 creatinine concentrations and 54,295 cats and 125,403 dogs with T1 creatinine at or below the URL. The probability of a persistently increased creatinine at T2 was approximately 58% for cats and 49% for dogs after a T1 increase. For animals without a T1 increase the probability of increased creatinine at T2 was only 7% for cats and 3% for dogs. For cats and dogs with persistently increased Cr, the probability of an increased SDMA concentration at T1 was 70-75%. By 24 months, that probability rose to 94% for cats and 88% for dogs.

The relationship between radiographic disc calcification score and FGF4L2 genotype in dachshunds.
Most dachshunds with 1 FGF4L2 copy have radiographic disc calcification scores that are associated with substantially lower risk of symptomatic disc disease. Radiographic disc calcification scores are similar in dachshunds with 0 and 1 FGF4L2 copies. Given the high allele frequency of FGF4L2, breeding to produce progeny with 1 FGF4L2 copy is expected to be a more achievable short-term goal for dachshund spinal health breeding programs than breeding for 0 copies. It is recommended that both K-n and FGF4L2 genotype status be considered when choosing dachshund breeding stock.
Use of Dog Serologic Data for Improved Understanding of Coccidioidomycosis: A One Health Approach.
The overall seropositivity rate among tested dogs was 37.6%. Average test positivity rates in states with =0.5 tests per annum per 10,000 households were 35.4% (Texas) to 74.1% (Montana). For these states, average annual incidence per 10,000 households was as follows: Arizona (86.8), New Mexico (0.89), Nevada (0.78), California (0.75), Montana (0.63), Colorado (0.41), Oregon (0.41), Texas (0.38), Idaho (0.37), Wyoming (0.34), Utah (0.32), and Washington (0.26). Human incidence in California and Arizona between 2012 and 2022 was significantly correlated with dog incidence.
Mass rabies exposure of veterinary health care workers in Germany: Management, immune response, and tolerability of post exposure-prophylaxis.
In 2008, Germany was declared free from terrestrial rabies by the WOAH. However, illegal pet imports can still lead to rabies exposure, as seen in the 2021 case of a rabid puppy illegally imported to Germany, resulting in a mass exposure (39 veterinary clinic staff) incident.
The 4 prokinetic drugs metoclopramide, cisapride, pyridostigmine, and capromorelin do not increase fecal output or food intake in healthy New Zealand rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).
Every day, rabbits produced a median of 75 g (range, 9 to 145 g) of feces, 226 fecal pellets (range, 12 to 412 pellets), and 151 mL (range, 5 to 420 mL) of urine. Metoclopramide, cisapride, pyridostigmine, and capromorelin had no effect on fecal production (both weight and number of pellets), food intake, urine production, or water intake compared to placebo at 24, 48, or 72 hours after administration.
Association between highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks and weather conditions in Japan.
We found that higher average air temperatures two to three weeks prior, lower average wind speeds four weeks prior, and longer sunlight hours two and four weeks prior to outbreaks were significantly associated with increased risk of HPAI outbreaks in Japan. These results suggest that weather may influence environmental survival and transmission of the virus, as well as patterns of wild bird movement that could seed new outbreaks.
