American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (2015) Conference Proceedings

Welcome to AAZV 2015

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to Portland for the 7th annual Exotic Animal Medicine for the Clinical Practitioner Conference (EAMCP) sponsored by the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians (AAZV). Founded in 1960, the AAZV is an organization dedicated to improving the health care, wellbeing, and the conservation of captive and free-ranging wildlife. This conference was designed to offer practitioners relevant continuing education for exotic species that are routinely seen in private practice.

I’d like to extend my gratitude to Drs. Trevor Zachariah and Gwen Jankowski for organizing this year’s conference. They have put together a diverse program highlighting clinical pathology/cytology of fish, cytologic diagnosis of disease, avian radiography, necropsy techniques, animal behavior/learning, avian feather destructive behaviors, reptile digestive medicine, and more. I also thank the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) for sponsoring the 14 units of continuing education credits this conference offers. The staff of the AAZV Administrative Office has been instrumental in making the logistical arrangements for this conference.

Following the EAMCP, the AAZV will hold its 47th Annual Conference. In addition, the Nutrition Advisory Group is meeting with us concurrently this year. Consider joining our 2016 conference as we will be meeting jointly with the European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZWV) and the Leibnitz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) in Atlanta. Please visit our website at www.aazv.org to learn more about our organization and the benefits our membership offers.

I hope you enjoy this two-day conference and we encourage your feedback for how to improve this experience for practitioners in the future.

Best regards,

Meg Sutherland-Smith, DVM, Dipl ACZM
President, American Association of Zoo Veterinarians
