Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists, actively interested in canine and feline nutrition.

Course Information:
The Internet and social media have become indispensable in terms of sharing news, digital images, music, and products to buy or sell. Unfortunately, numerous retailers and veterinary and non-veterinary bloggers perpetuate nutritional myths, which can be confusing for pet owners, veterinarians and their technical staff. This course will shine a light on alternative nutrition facts and discuss how to employ logic (and evidence) for practical dietary recommendations. We'll also offer up some reputable online resources for practices and pet owners.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. About the Presenter:
Dr. Sarah Abood received her Bachelor of Science degree (1984) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (1988) from Michigan State University. After completing a one-year internship in large animal medicine and surgery at the University of Minnesota, she spent 5 years at The Ohio State University, working on a PhD and in a clinical nutrition residency with Dr. Tony Buffington. She earned her PhD from OSU in 1997, and from 1994 to 1999, she worked as a nutrition scientist in Research & Technical Communications at the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis, Missouri. For the past 16 years, Dr. Abood has worked at Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine where she served as both the Assistant Dean for Student Programs and the small animal clinical nutritionist in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She has co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as several book chapters and the Manual of Veterinary Dietetics.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
