Animal health is a growing industry. It is estimated that between 1993 and 1995, the sales of prescription drugs for companion animals rose 45% to reach approximately $1 billion. Interestingly, the sale of drugs for use in farm animals continues to be about two times the companion animal market. There are a variety of opportunities for veterinarians in both the human and veterinary pharmaceutical industries. These positions are not restricted to care of laboratory animals. This discussion will focus on the wide range of employment opportunities available in the pharmaceutical industry for veterinary school graduates. A brief review of the regulatory approval process for animal drugs will be used to illustrate the opportunities available to veterinarians in industry.
