COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course explores the importance of leadership in creating successful practices. Practice owners must learn to spend some time being the CEO of their practice. This involves learning the essential skills of effective practice leaders, knowing which leadership pattern to employ, using power and influence constructively, leading by serving, encouraging innovation and creativity, building an effective practice team, employing analytical skills, bringing about constructive change, developing a system for managing the practice, and executing the strategic plan.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1: Lead Your Practice to a New Level: Dr. Know Thyself.
This session will begin with a discussion of why it is critical for a practice owner to spend time being the CEO-leader of his/her practice. The effective practice CEO will exhibit effective technical, human, and conceptual skills. The CEO must have an understanding of and proficiency in being an effective doctor-the technical skills. He/she must work effectively as a practice team member and build collaborative effort within the team he/she leads-the human skills. Conceptual skill is the ability to see the practice as a whole, recognize the interrelationships of all practice components, recognize the relationships of the practice to the local external environment, create a system to manage these demanding responsibilities, and make decisions.

Week 2: Lead Your Practice to a New Level: Creating Followers
In this session, we will explore different leadership patterns and how employees respond to these. The interrelationships between leadership pattern, practice culture and client perception will be explained. The appropriate uses of power, influence, coaching, motivation, delegation, and empowerment will be covered. The importance of leader values in creating followers will be examined. Learn how your leadership mood can influence practice culture, improve productivity, and profitability.

Week 3: Lead Your Practice to a New Level: Innovate, Innovate, Innovate!
If you have developed a practice strategic plan, you no doubt identified things that you would like to add to your practice or things that you would like to change. This session will address the importance of innovation and creativity in bringing about practice growth. This session will review the critical role of the CEO-leader in introducing new ideas to the practice and how he/she can engage the employees in problem solving and innovative activities. These activities may include introduction of a new service, improving the quality and delivery of an existing service, or improving internal practice efficiency.

Week 4: Lead Your Practice to a New Level: Leading Change-Reducing Resistance
This session expands upon the topics of Week 3 and explores why owners, associates and doctors may resist change. Participants will learn practical steps to effect change and transform their practices. Several of the important steps in this process are to share the practice vision, communicate the vision and empower staff and doctors to act on the vision.

Week 5: Lead Your Practice to a New Level: Executing Your Practice Strategy
Practice leaders face difficult decisions when leading a practice. In this session, Dr. Marv Johnson, a veteran private and corporate practice owner, will cover the critical factors involved in the decision making process. The concept of the 'highest and best use' of doctors, staff, and other resources will be discussed and related to practice productivity, efficiency, and profitability.
