COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will cover both the manual and chemical restraint of non-domestic hoofstock including exotic equids, swine, cattle, deer, antelope, and others species that are commonly found in zoos and sometimes in private ownership. The safe use and delivery of immobilization drugs, including etorphine, carfentanil, A3080, and concentrated medetomidine, will be discussed. Specific anesthesia protocols, including drugs, monitoring, fasting guidelines, and avoidance of capture myopathy, will be outlined for many species. Particular emphasis will be placed on the practicalities, rather than the theory, of immobilization of these animals.
