COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide veterinary practitioners with practical diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to selected topics in hematology. The six-week course will include sessions on the Diagnostic Approach to Anemia, Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, Bone Marrow Analysis, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, Immunosuppressive Therapy, and Transfusion Medicine. Six interactive sessions, with accompanying lecture notes, will be supported by a series of challenging web-based "What is Your Diagnosis" problem cases to work through.

COURSE OUTLINE
WEEK 1 - Diagnostic Approach to Anemia: A rational diagnostic approach to anemia, based on simple tests and an understanding of underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms, will be discussed.

WEEK 2 - Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia: This session will highlight the latest information regarding diagnosis and treatment of IMHA. How to look for important underlying disease processes that affect the clinician's approach to therapy will be discussed.

WEEK 3 - Bone Marrow Analysis: This session will concentrate on the indications for bone marrow analysis, and then discuss techniques that practitioners can use to maximize their chances of successfully obtaining diagnostic marrow samples.

WEEK 4 - Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation: Fascinating new information regarding the pathophysiolgy of DIC will be discussed. Controversies regarding diagnosis and treatment will be addressed, and practical patient-based treatment recommendations will be outlined.

WEEK 5 - Immunosuppressive Therapy: The ins-and-outs of the initial immunosuppressive treatment and the long-term drug management of the immune-mediated blood disorders will be discussed. Emphasis will be on both the common immunosuppressive agents and the newer therapies.

WEEK 6 - Transfusion Medicine: Blood components / blood substitutes available to the practitioner will be discussed. The indications and contraindications - in the context of the individual patient - will be covered.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

1. Develop a logical diagnostic approach to patients with anemia.

2. Diagnose IMHA, recognize associated/precipitating disease processes, and formulate a patient based therapeutic plan.

3. Understand the common indications for bone marrow analysis, and use marrow collection techniques.

4. Understand the pathophysiology of DIC, recognize it early, and formulate treatment based on the individual patient's clinical status.

5. Develop a rational immunosuppressive therapeutic plan for animals with IMHA and IMT.

6. Know currently available blood components and blood substitutes, and understand their clinical indications and contraindications.
