Course Information:
French Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Japanese Chins, and of course, French Bulldogs (yes, again)…..these breeds present great challenges with respiratory issues, but how often do we consider the digestive issues seen in these breeds? Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) has increased significantly due to the popularity of brachycephalic breeds. Traditionally, the concern has been focused on surgical correction to alleviate respiratory conditions. This concern remains today along with an increase of signs involving the digestive tract. This presentation will review the signs associated with digestive concerns, along with the anatomic and pathophysiologic characteristics contributing to the alimentary tract. Nutritional management to alleviate and manage digestive disease in brachycephalic patients will be discussed.
- Understand and identify anatomical features contributing to BOAS
- Identify signs associated with the involvement of the digestive and alimentary tracts in brachycephalic patients
- Understand nutritional modification to alleviate signs in these patients
- Communicate the nutritional plan to owners
