Course Information:
Anesthesia on wildlife avian patients is not inherently more dangerous than working with mammalian patients. Grow your confidence and learn how to be a medical advocate for wildlife avian species. This course will focus on monitoring wild avian species for surgical procedures, and participants will first strengthen their understanding of avian anatomy and physiology while connecting these unique features to wildlife avian patient anesthetic impacts. This application of knowledge lends to being able to safely monitor wildlife avian anesthesia from induction through to recovery. Further, discussing the technical aspects behind the skills necessary to safely support avian patients will help to make the connection between knowledge and application seamless.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand and describe avian anatomy and physiology
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper patient preparation for anesthetic events
  • Describe body assessment, physical examination of the avian wildlife patient
  • Discuss induction, intubation, intravenous/intraosseous catheterization and fluid therapy
  • Demonstrate knowledge of blood collection and pre-anesthetic lab values
  • Describe the tools and skills utilized in anesthesia monitoring of the avian patient
  • Identify adverse anesthesia complications and how to safely monitor the avian wildlife patient undergoing anesthesia
