Course Information:
This course will explore how the technician’s role in managing patients in shock is vital to successful patient outcomes. We will explore the pathophysiology of shock and review the various types of shock, as well as the different stages of shock our patients may be dealing with. Our focus will be on the technician’s role in recognizing shock and managing patients in the various types of shock states. In the second part of this course, we will learn how SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome) and sepsis are complex and life-threatening conditions that require prompt recognition and treatment. We will review the pathophysiology and diagnostic criteria of SIRS and sepsis, as well as the latest evidence-based treatment strategies. We discuss the importance of early detection and intervention in improving patient outcomes and the role veterinary technicians play in providing treatment for these critical patients. By the end of this course, you will have a thorough understanding of key concepts and strategies for managing SIRS and sepsis to provide optimal patient care.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize various types of shock including; hypovolemic shock, distributive shock, cardiogenic shock and obstructive shock
- Define the different stages of shock
- Understand the pathophysiology what is happening to our patients in shock
- Explain the treatment options for shock
- Understand the differences between SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome), sepsis, and septic shock
- Define SIRS and sepsis
- Understand the pathophysiology that can lead to SIRS, sepsis, and septic shock
- Utilize the treatment options available
- Understand your role as a veterinary technician in recognizing and treating SIRS, sepsis, and septic shock
