Course Information:
Hypertension is a common finding in cats. Because of the effects of untreated hypertension on highly vascular target organs (i.e., eyes, brain, kidneys, and cardiovascular system), it is very important to detect elevations in blood pressure (BP) early in order to prevent permanent damage. Additionally, monitoring the BP of every anesthetized patient is critical to ensure and avoid intra-operative and post-operative effects of hypotension. The biggest concern practitioners have regarding measuring blood pressure in cats is the effect of stress. In this presentation, practical aspects regarding measurement as well as the pathophysiology behind elevations in blood pressure will be discussed so the practitioner and veterinary technicians can have greater confidence in the interpretation of readings.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Identify what etiologies may be contributing to this disorder.
  • Explain the risks of persistent hypertension.
  • Demonstrate the role of stress in blood pressure and how to minimize it.
  • Explain how the veterinarian will treat hypertension.
  • Know how to minimize the risk of hypotension.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course is open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists, actively interested in blood pressure for the feline patient. .

RACE Credit Approval: This program has been approved for 2 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.(20-998850)
