Course Information:
Urinalysis is a common, point of care test in which veterinary technicians play a pivotal role. This course will cover sample collection, processing, and microscopic urine sediment evaluation, including ways to minimize errors in handling and processing.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Minimize errors during the collection process.
  • Prioritize tests to maximize test results.
  • Describe the principles behind the tests of a urinalysis.
  • Identify limitations of both manual and automated methods.
  • Understand the importance of sediment slide preparation and evaluation.
  • Recognize factors which affect results.
  • Identify structures in urine sediment.
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. (20-929417)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 27, 2022): Urine Sample Collection and testing
This session will cover sample collection and will include gross and chemical evaluation, collection supplies, and techniques to get the most out of samples by minimizing interfering factors. Prioritizing tests will also be discussed.

Week 2 (Real Time Session November 3, 2022): Urine Microscopic Sediment Evaluation
This session will cover microscopic identification of structures in urine sediment

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
