Are you seeking last-minute CE credits for license renewal? Are you passionate about all things anesthesia? This program will include anesthesia skills (arterial catheters, capnography); drug choice for anesthetizing patients; how pulse oximeters work and reviewing the oxygen hemoglobin saturation curve; and anesthesia protocols for the emergency patent. This is the event for you! VSPN is pleased to offer this one-day conference on Saturday, December 4, 2021. This is a one-day event, with four 90-minute sessions presented in webinar format. You must attend the live webinar to earn a certificate of participation. There will be a thirty minute break for lunch at 2:00pm ET.

Participants will have access to the abstracts for each presentation 2 weeks prior to the event. There are no library materials or end of course test associated with this event. You must be a VIN or VSPN member to enroll. VSPN is seeking RACE approval for veterinary technicians for this event; we are not seeking approval for veterinarian CEU’s.

AVTAA Advanced Anesthesia Skills: Arterial Catheters and Capnography Overview        
Presenter: Heidi Reuss-Lamky, LVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia), (Surgery), Fear Free Elite Certified Professional

Objectives: After attending this session, attendees will: 

  • Be able to discuss the skills needed for arterial catheter placement.
  • Describe and create a plan to maintain arterial catheters.
  • Define capnography; how to utilize, interpret, and troubleshoot capnography during anesthesia monitoring.

Thinking Outside of the Box: Decreasing Morbidity and Mortality Through Mindful Drug Selection

  • Attendees will leave this lecture with an in-depth understanding of common anesthetic drugs and how to develop an anesthetic and analgesic plan.

Advanced Pulse Oximeter Shiz        
Presenter: Amanda M. Shelby, BSc, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia)

Objectives: After attending this session, attendees will:

  • Understand how a pulse oximeter works and derives a plethograph and SpO2 reading.
  • Understand the clinical limitations of a pulse oximeter. Review the oxygen hemoglobin saturation curve which explore how the non-invasive SpO2 measurement relates to the partial pressure of oxygen of arterial blood.
  • Introduce new technologies and advancements in pulse oximetry technology and the potential for future clinical applications in veterinary medicine.

Adrenal Squeeze: Anesthesia for the Emergency Patient

  • Understand the unique challenges that ER patients present to the anesthetist.
  • Learn to anticipate the physiologic complications associated with various emergent pathologies.
  • Gain confidence in developing robust anesthetic plans that mitigate risk and help ensure successful outcomes for critically ill or injured patients
