Course Information:
Common bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic zoonoses encountered by the veterinary professional will be covered. Clinical presentation in both animals and humans will be reviewed. Treatment and tests for these diseases will also be discussed. Prevention of transmission and protection of veterinary staff and clients will be explored.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define zoonoses and their importance in One Health.
  • Examine how zoonotic diseases are transmitted.
  • Describe the most effective ways to prevent transmission of zoonotic diseases.
  • Discuss how to keep staff in the veterinary clinic safe from zoonoses.
  • Identify common bacterial zoonoses.
  • Define how bacterial zoonoses are most commonly transmitted.
  • Review signs and symptoms related to bacterial zoonoses.
  • Discuss common treatment for bacterial zoonotic diseases.
  • Identify viral zoonoses commonly seen in practice.
  • Illustrate the difference between an outbreak, endemic and pandemic.
  • Define how viral zoonoses are most commonly transmitted.
  • Examine the role of vectors in the spread of viral zoonotic disease.
  • Identify signs and symptoms related to viral zoonoses.
  • Discuss common treatment for viral zoonotic diseases.
  • Explain how fungal zoonoses are commonly transmitted
  • Describe how parasitic zoonoses are commonly transmitted
  • Identify the difference between protozoa, cestodes and nematodes
  • Examine laboratory tests for parasites
  • Discuss common treatment for fungal and parasitic zoonotic diseases
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VSPN CE non-interactive course will examine zoonotic diseases often seen by veterinary staff. . VSPN CE Course: Open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff. This course has been RACE approved for veterinary technicians/technologists.(20-764539)

Course Agenda:

Segment 1: What are Zoonoses?
The first section in this course will review the definition of zoonotic disease and explain how these diseases are transmitted. We will also examine how to prevent transmission and the most effective ways to keep staff safe from infection.

Segment 2: Bacterial Zoonoses?
This section will review common bacterial zoonotic diseases and their treatment. This will include Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, Salmonella, Listeriosis and Bartonella Henselea

Segment 3: Viral Zoonoses
This section will review common viral zoonotic disease and their treatment. These will include Rabies, West Nile Virus, H1N1, Cornoaviruses and Ebola.

Segment 4: Fungal and Parasitic Zoonoses
This section will review common fungal and parasitic zoonoses and their treatment. These will include Giardia, Toxoplasmosis, Babesiosis, Lesmaniasis, Ringworm and Toxocara.
