Course Information:
This course will discuss several common household toxins and some that are less common as well. Common signs and symptoms associated with toxicity will be discussed and, where appropriate, other toxic principles such as LD50 and mechanism of action. We will discuss the several common agents that are non-toxic or those that may cause mild signs that often do not necessitate treatment, such as fertilizers, household cleaning products, and several others, and then we will take a deeper dive into several agents that do cause more concerning signs and do require treatment such as rodenticides and zinc.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Learn common toxicology principles
  • Understand that not all toxicity cases are treated the same and that sometimes common treatments are not warranted and may be contraindicated.
  • Learn the major types of rodenticides available on the market and the importance of identification for appropriate treatment.
  • Learn the importance of plant identification and discuss methods of doing so.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.(20-923592)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 28): Environmental Toxins I
In this session, we’ll start out by transitioning from household toxins (indoor) to environmental toxins (outdoor) and discuss the differences therein. We’ll look at common plants outside the home-both toxic and non-toxic, and we’ll investigate toxicity associated with blue green algae as well. We’ll discuss some common types of outdoor fertilizers and insecticides as well.

Week 2 (Real Time Session August 17): HEnvironmental Toxins II
Rodenticides are a very common toxicological emergency in small animal medicine, and in this session, we’ll investigate the most common types of rodenticides in North America. We’ll discuss the main types, the importance of identification, toxic doses, and treatment modalities. In the case of zinc phosphide, we’ll discuss the hazard that presents to staff as well.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
