Course Information:
This course will cover the importance of isolation and barrier nursing for patients with infectious diseases. Infection control, personal protective equipment, and staff compliance will be covered. Common infectious diseases will be reviewed, and special nursing considerations will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Examine the importance of isolation and barrier nursing.
  • Discuss infectious disease plans for clinics.
  • Plan staff training in infectious disease protocols.
  • Explain isolation room setup.
  • Discuss how to deal with a patient who is too sick to be in isolation.
  • Discuss infection control, personal protective equipment, hygiene, and compliance.
  • Discuss triaging the infectious patient.
  • Examine gastrointestinal diseases that require isolation.
  • Examine respiratory diseases that require isolation.
  • Examine zoonotic diseases that require isolation.
  • Discuss reverse barrier nursing.
  • Examine nursing considerations in isolation.
  • Discuss the challenges of being in isolation alone.
  • Discuss communication with veterinarians, other staff, and owners.
  • Examine patient wellness, nutrition, and enrichment.
  • Discuss patient discharge and follow up.
  • Review isolation clean up.
Level and Prerequisites: This Intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. (20-912999)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 13): Isolation and Barrier Nursing – What, Why, Who, and How
This session will examine isolation and barrier nursing, including the specialized requirements for triaging and examination. the importance of infection control, PPE, and cleanup will be discussed.

Week 2 (Real Time Session July 20): Common Infectious Disease and Special Nursing Considerations
This session will review common diseases that require isolation. We will also discuss the special wellness, nutrition, and enrichment requirements of patients in isolation. Communication with doctors, owners, and other technicians will be examined.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
