Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants and support staff actively interested in improving their treatment protocols for patients that require isolation.

Course Description:
This Course will cover the importance of Isolation and Barrier Nursing for patients with infectious diseases. Infection control, personal protective equipment and staff compliance will be covered. Common infectious diseases will be reviewed and special nursing considerations will be discussed

Week 1 (Real Time Session February 11): Isolation and Barrier Nursing - What, Why, Who and How
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Examine the Importance of Isolation and Barrier Nursing
  • Discuss Infectious Disease Plans for Clinics.
  • Plan Staff Training in Infectious Disease Protocols.
  • Explain Isolation Room Setup.
  • Discuss How to Deal with a Patient who is too Sick to be in Isolation.
  • Discuss Infection Control, Personal Protective Equipment, Hygiene and Compliance.
Week 2 (Real Time Session February 18): Common Infectious Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: <
  • Discuss Triaging the Infectious Patient.
  • Examine GI Diseases that Require Isolation.
  • Examine Respiratory Diseases that Require Isolation.
  • Examine Zoonotic Diseases that Require Isolation.
  • Discuss Reverse Barrier Nursing.
Week 3 (Real Time Session February 25): Special Considerations for Isolation
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Examine Nursing Considerations in Isolation.
  • Discuss the Challenges of Being in Isolation Alone.
  • Discuss Communication with Doctors, other Technicians and Owners.
  • Examine Patient Wellness, Nutrition and Enrichment.
  • Discuss Patient Discharge and Follow up.
  • Review Isolation Clean up.
< Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Melissa Evans, LVT, VTS (ECC) started her second career as a credentialed veterinary technician in 2013 after graduating from Bergen Community College. Before that she was a struggling actress who volunteered with animals as often as possible, learning all that she could before realizing that the next step was to just take care of animals all the time. Melissa has spent her entire veterinary career working in specialty hospitals as an Emergency, ICU and Critical Care Technician. In 2018 she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialty in Emergency and Critical Care. Melissa currently works as a per diem ECC Technician at multiple specialty hospitals throughout New York City. She also has experience working in shelter, wildlife and disaster medicine. Melissa is a RECOVER CPR Certified Instructor and the owner of Melissa Evans, VTS (ECC) - Veterinary Nurse Consulting
