Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff actively interested in increasing their knowledge of cardiac cases in small animals.

Course Description:
This goal of this course is to clarify some aspects of cardiac disease that are frequently misunderstood. A better understanding of common presentations of patients with heart disease will take the anxiety of the staff to a lower level as well as increase the standard of patient care. Starting with a review of normal cardiac structure and pressures and advancing to end stage heart disease, the attendee will be more confident in their approach to patient care.

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 29): Review of Normal Cardiac Structures /Pressures and Heart Sounds
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Discuss and understand normal cardiac physiology.
  • Describe heart sounds and what they represent on cardio physical exam.
Week 2 (Real Time Session April 5): Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs and Cats/Arteriothromboembolism
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Discuss approach to patients in congestive heart failure with confidence.
  • Discuss arteriothromboembolism.
  • Identify tips for patient care that may be used to decrease the stress to these patients while treating them.
Week 3 (Real Time Session April 19): Understanding Pericardial Effusion
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Discuss the many potential causes of pericardial effusion.
  • Explain how to approach patients presenting with pericardial effusion with less anxiety.
  • Identify physical exam tips to better assess how critical a patient with PE.
Week 4 (Real Time Session April 26): DCM vs Systolic Failure
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Discuss DCM and understand it as a specific diagnosis.
  • Identify other disease processes that mimic DCM that can be treated.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Presenter:
Kristie Garcia, LVT, VTS (Cardiology): After graduating and passing the VTNE in 2001, Kristie worked in General Practice for 3 years before starting at Garden State Veterinary Specialists (GSVS) in NJ. Later, after moving to Ithaca and working for a few years in the Cardiology Department at Cornell University Hospital for Animals, she returned to GSVS to work in the Cardiology department. She achieved her VTS for Cardiology in 2009 and she currently serves as the Director at Large for the AIMVT Cardiology technicians. She has a special passion for electrocardiograms and Holter analysis. Her happy place is in the cardiology cath lab and any day she gets to share her love of Cardiology is a good day.
