Course Information:
The ability to perform veterinary calculations is an essential task for veterinary technicians and nurses. For many, a lack of confidence and understanding of how to solve such problems can lead to frustration and self-doubt. While there are certain calculators available on the internet to help solve some veterinary problems, they do not teach you how to solve any other problem, thus reinforcing the lack of understanding. This course will not cover shortcuts or formulas that you simply post on the wall and don’t have to think about; as these will not help you to understand how to solve these types of problems. This course will cover the principles behind dimensional analysis and how we can utilize it to simplify and solve veterinary calculations. We will review dosage calculations, concentrations, dilutions, fluid rates, and constant rate infusions. Detailed step by step calculations will be presented in the library of the course, as well as calculations for you to work on thru the message boards. The goal of this class is to help build your confidence through knowledge and practice of various types of veterinary calculations. I want you to be confident in your problem-solving skills and your ability to calculate CRI’s and other veterinary calculations.

• Understand dimensional analysis and how we can use it to simplify and solve veterinary calculations
• Set up and calculate basic dosage calculations
• Convert a percent solution into a useable drug concentration
• Set up and determine how to solve dilutions we may run into during daily clinical practice
• Calculate fluid rates
• Calculate drip rates using a fluid administration set
• Calculate drip rates using a blood administration set
• Identify the required information to set up and calculate a constant rate infusion
• Calculate various types of constant rate infusions
• Calculate multiple CRIs for the same patient taking each into account
• Build confidence in your abilities to calculate CRI’s

Week 2 (Real Time Session February 15): What the heck is a CRI and why do you want me to calculate it??
Week 2 will include discussions of calculations for drip rates (fluids and blood administration), information required to calculate constant rate infusion.

Week 3 (Real Time Session February 22): Yes, I Can Calculate that CRI for You Doc!
This week continues discussions about constant rate infusions, calculating multiple CRIs for the same patient, and building confidence in your ability to calculate CRI's.
