Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff, actively interested in furthering their understanding of kidney function and disease.

Course Description:
This course will discuss the anatomy and physiology of the kidneys. This interactive class will teach participants to interpret lab work specific to the kidneys. Special considerations for kidney injury patients will be discussed.

Week 1 (Real Time Session December 4): The Kidney and the Functions
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Show an understanding of the main functions of the kidney in both the dog and cat.
  • Identify the differences between pre-renal, renal, and post-renal disease process.
Week 2 (Real Time Session December 11): Kidneys on Lab Work
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Show an understanding of different testing modalities of the kidney.
  • Discuss kidney-specific values on lab work.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Presenter:
Ashley DiPrete, RVT, VTS (SAIM) is currently the Internal Medicine Department Lead and the Technician Training Supervisor at Iron Horse Vet Care in Dublin California. She attended the Veterinary Technology program at the College of Southern Nevada and received her Registered Veterinary Technician license in 2009. In 2016 she earned her Veterinary Technician Specialty certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She currently is the President of AIMVT (2019). In 2019 she also co-founded Internal Medicine for Pet Parents to support owners of pets with chronic medical conditions.
