Course Information:
Pediatric and geriatric patients can present challenging circumstances when undergoing anesthesia for surgical procedures. This course will discuss special anesthetic considerations for neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric populations of canine and feline patients. This interactive class with teach participants about anatomical and physiological changes that can affect anesthesia these various life stages. Anesthetic monitoring equipment, machine selection, catheterization, fluid therapy, and anesthetic protocol will also be discussed in detail.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Show an understanding of the basic anatomic and physiologic differences in neonatal and pediatric patients compared to adult counterparts.
  • Discuss appropriate sedation and anesthetic techniques in neonatal and pediatric patients.
  • Show an understanding of basic monitoring techniques and anesthetic equipment needed for anesthesia in neonatal and pediatric patients.
  • Identify common IV and IO catheterization sites and discuss appropriate fluid therapy.
  • Show an understanding of the basic anatomic and physiologic differences in geriatric patients.
  • Discuss appropriate sedation and anesthetic techniques in geriatric patients.
  • Show an understanding of basic monitoring techniques and anesthetic equipment needed for anesthesia in geriatric patients.
  • Identify common IV and IO catheterization sites and discuss appropriate fluid therapy.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course is open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff actively interested in advancing their skills when anesthetizing pediatric and geriatric patients.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.(20-844899)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 13): esthetic Considerations in the Pediatric Patient
This session will include basic anatomic and physiologic differences in neonatal and pediatric patients compared to adult counterparts, discuss appropriate sedation and anesthetic techniques in neonatal and pediatric patients. We will also discuss equipment, IV and IO catheterization sites and fluid therapy.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 20): Anesthetic Considerations in the Geriatric Patient
This session will include basic anatomic and physiologic differences in geriatric patients compared to younger counterparts, discuss appropriate sedation and anesthetic techniques in neonatal and pediatric patients. We will also discuss equipment, IV and IO catheterization sites and fluid therapy.
