Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff actively interested in advancing their skills when anesthetizing pediatric and geriatric patients.

Course Description:
This course will discuss special anesthetic considerations for neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric populations of canine and feline patients. This interactive class will teach participants about anatomical and physiological changes that can affect anesthesia at these various life stages. Anesthetic monitoring equipment, machine selection, catheterization, fluid therapy, and anesthetic protocol will also be discussed in detail.

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 23): Anesthetic Considerations in the Pediatric Patient
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Show an understanding of the basic anatomic and physiologic differences in neonatal and pediatric patients compared to adult counterparts.
  • Discuss appropriate sedation and anesthetic techniques in neonatal and pediatric patients.
  • Show an understanding of basic monitoring techniques and anesthetic equipment needed for anesthesia in neonatal and pediatric patients.
  • Identify common IV and IO catheterization sites and discuss appropriate fluid therapy.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 30): Anesthetic Considerations in the Geriatric Patient
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:
  • Show an understanding of the basic anatomic and physiologic differences in geriatric patients.
  • Discuss appropriate sedation and anesthetic techniques in geriatric patients.
  • Show an understanding of basic monitoring techniques and anesthetic equipment needed for anesthesia in geriatric patients.
  • Identify common IV and IO catheterization sites and discuss appropriate fluid therapy.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Instructor:
Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia, Exotic Companion Animal) has worked for the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital since 1999, working in the companion exotics department for 10 years and currently the small animal anesthesia department where she is the supervisor. Ms. Nugent-Deal is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and is the executive secretary for the group as well as the appeals committee chair. Jody is an active member with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia having served on the nominations, credentials and appeals committees. Jody is currently a Member At Large for the AVTAA. Ms. Nugent-Deal has lectured throughout North America since 2000 on anesthesia and various exotic animal topics. Jody has published numerous articles and book chapters for both canine/feline and exotic animal medicine and anesthesia topics. Jody is an instructor for both VSPN and VetMedTeam and she has a special interest in anesthesia, analgesia, pain management and critical care in exotics and dogs and cats. In Jody’s spare time, she loves to read, visit the ocean, run, road and mountain bike.
