Course Information:
Shock must be treated diligently and appropriately, while investigating the underlying cause as shock is not a diagnosis of its own. In this lecture, we’ll explore the pathophysiology of shock, the stages and types of shock, and current treatment modalities. There is an emphasis placed on the role the veterinary technician plays in the successful outcome of treating shock. We’ll talk about shock doses of fluids, medications used, and the importance of vital signs monitoring in the shock patient.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Define shock.
  • Discuss classes of shock.
  • Learn importance of differentiating classes of shock.
  • Identify the 3 stages of shock.
  • Recognize the clinical signs of the different stages of shock.
  • Learn interpretation of diagnostic testing that may help identify a patient in shock.
  • Discuss treatment of the various types of shock.
  • Discuss real life case examples to exemplify common cases of shock.
Level and Prerequisites: This basic VSPN CE course is open to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff that are actively interested in increasing their knowledge of shock, both its causes and treatments.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been submitted (but is not yet approved) for 4.5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session March 23): Definition and Classes of Shock
During this session we will discuss the definition and classifications of shock. We will also discuss the importance of differentiating the classes of shock.

Week 2 (Real Time Session March 30): Stages of Shock and Diagnostic Testing
This week we will discuss how to identify the three stages of shock, how to recognize clinical signs, and learn interpretation of diagnostic testing.

Week 3 (Real Time Session April 6): Treatment of Shock and Case Examples
During this final session, we will discuss treatment of various types of shock and run through real-life case examples.
