Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in veterinary anesthesia.

Course Information:
This course will cover common arrhythmias and hypotension seen in anesthesia patients. We will discuss recognition, underlying causes, and recommended therapies. The second half of this course we will focus our discussion on hypotension; causes, consequences, and therapies.

Week 1 (Real Time Session November 10): Arrhythmias in the Anesthesia Patient
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • Recognize common arrhythmias seen with anesthesia.
  • Anticipate arrhythmias seen with specific disease processes.
  • Be familiar with current therapies.
Week 2 (Real Time Session November 17): Hypotension in the Anesthesia Patient
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • Know what normal blood pressure is and what is defined as hypotension.
  • Causes of hypotension.
  • Consequences of hypotension.
  • Steps to addressing hypotension.

About the Presenter:
Dianne Hudson, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia) has worked at the Oklahoma State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital since 1984. She has had a diverse career working in multiple departments including Small Animal Medicine, Equine Medicine and Surgery, Small Animal ICU as the Staff Supervisor in addition to her role as in anesthesia for the past 20 plus years. Dianne has had the pleasure of teaching ECG interpretation in a private practice setting, as a guest lecturer for Tulsa Community College, Murray State College and OSU-OKC veterinary technician programs. She has also designed an interactive computer based course covering anesthesia monitoring and ECG interpretation in addition lecturing on ECG interpretation at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium.
