Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists, actively interested in small animal neurology

Course Description:
This interactive course will explore a variety of encephalopathies commonly appreciated in canine and feline patients. The main focus will be on the clinical signs, physiology, diagnostics, treatment and prognosis of each of the encephalopathies discussed. There will be videos and advanced diagnostic images utilized to help visualize each disease.

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 3): Anatomy/Physiology of the Brain and MRI Basics
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

• Recognize the differences between forebrain, brainstem, vestibular and cerebellar anatomy and physiology
• Identify the twelve cranial nerves and their respective functions
• Understand the arterial supply and venous drainage of the brain
• Describe the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid formation, circulation and drainage
• Identify MRI planes and various sequences

Week 2 (Real Time Session October 10): Forebrain Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

• Identify diseases of the forebrain
• Know clinical signs associated with forebrain diseases
• Differentiate between seizure types
• Understand differences in anti-epileptic drug therapies
• Explain the pathophysiology between metabolic encephalopathies
• Recognize the MRI differences between primary tumor types

Week 3 (Real Time Session October 17): Brainstem/Vestibular Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

• Understand the differences in central versus peripheral versus paradoxical vestibular localizations
• Know the clinical signs associated with vestibular diseases
• Differentiate between diseases in the peripheral vestibular versus the central vestibular regions
• Identify the toxins that may cause vestibular dysfunction
• Recognize infectious causes of vestibular dysfunction

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 24): Cerebellar Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

• Know the clinical signs associated with cerebellar diseases
• Recognize the differences between cerebellar malformations
• Identify various cerebellar diseases on MRI
• Explain the differences between tremor syndromes

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Carissa Reese obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at Purdue University and became a registered veterinary technician in 2003. She worked in general practice for 4 years, and then returned to academia at Purdue University in 2007. She was integral in developing the neurology service at Purdue University as the senior neurology technologist. Carissa pursued advanced education and training in neurology, and achieved board certification in 2011 by the Academy of Internal Medicine Veterinary Technicians as a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Neurology. In 2014, Carissa and her husband moved to South East Florida to work at a neurology exclusive specialty hospital. They recently opened a sister clinic to Southeast Veterinary Neurology, in Boynton Beach, FL. She has a strong interest in advanced imaging, neurosurgery, and teaching.
