Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in avian medicine.
VSPN CE Course: Open to veterinary technicians/technologists, and support staff.

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide participants with a review of the unique anatomy and physiology of avian species while also providing information about the common disease conditions that can affect pet birds. Participants will learn how to assess, triage, and handle debilitated pet birds. Causes, clinical signs, diagnostic tests, nursing management, prognosis, and treatment options of common disease conditions in pet birds will be discussed.

Week 1 (Real Time Session August 5): Respiratory & Cardiovascular Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 2 (Real Time Session August 12): Gastrointestinal/Nutritional & Endocrine Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 3 (Real Time Session August 19): Reproductive & Hepatic Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 4 (Real Time Session August 26): Skin, Musculoskeletal, & Ophthalmic Diseases
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Required Textbook: There is no required textbook for this course.

About the Instructor:
Sarah Kolb, BAS, RVT, VTS (exotic companion animals) Sarah earned her veterinary technician credentials in 2005. Shortly after, Sarah began employment with Iowa State University Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center in the Exotic Companion Animal Department and the Wildlife Care Clinic dedicating herself to the medical care of exotic animals and wildlife for the past 14 years. Sarah began employment with the University of Wisconsin-Madison National Primate Research Center in March 2020. Sarah achieved VTS status with the AVTCP in exotic companion animals in 2015 and earned her BAS in veterinary technology in 2018. Sarah is currently serving as the Vice-President for the AVTCP for 2020-2021 and will serve as President for 2022-2023. Sarah is also a VSPN instructor, has lectured at various national conferences, and has published multiple articles in both the NAVTA Journal and Veterinary Nurses Today. Sarah is committed to life-long learning and sharing her knowledge about exotic animals through lecturing, writing, and instructing online courses.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.

Course withdrawal and refund policy: A complete refund of the paid course price will be issued when your withdrawal request is received prior to the listed start date of the course.
