Course Information:
Acquired cardiac diseases and their challenges, these cases are probably the most common to present to our facilities in need of anesthesia support for diagnostics or interventional procedures. This session will cover the most common acquired cardiac disease, potential complications, and methods for enhancing the safety of the anesthesia event. Many of these patients are on medications to medically manage their disease, so discussion of anesthetic and analgesic agents will be covered as well as agents to manage intraoperative complications relating to their cardiac dysfunction.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Show an understanding of normal cardiac anatomy, function, and physiology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the various common cardiac diseases presented to a small animal facility.
  • Outline a pre-anesthetic patient assessment and plan, including anticipated anesthesia and procedural problems that may occur in the anesthetized cardiac patient.
  • Apply knowledge of anesthesia, analgesia, and support drug therapy that the veterinarian may prescribe for the cardiac patient with congenital cardiac defects.
  • Design a monitoring plan to enhance the safety of the cardiac patient while anesthetized.
  • Interpret data from monitoring the cardiac patient under anesthesia and use this information to further enhance patient safety due to complications that may arise during a procedure.
  • Work through step by step to help the participant troubleshoot issues that may occur with patients with cardiac compromise.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists and support staff seeking to expand their knowledge of cardiac function, cardiovascular anesthesia monitoring, and the analgesic/anesthetic agents that might be more appropriate for certain types of cardiac compromise.

RACE Credit Approval: This program has been approved for 6 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval.(20-933467)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session May 1): Cardiac Function
This real-time session will cover cardiac anatomy, function and physiology, and common small animal cardiac diseases.

Week 2 (Real Time Session May 8): Common Congenital Cardiac Defects
This real time session will discuss pre-anesthetic patient assessment and planning, including anticipated anesthesia and procedural problems that may occur in the anesthetized cardiac patient.

Week 3 (Real Time Session May 15): Acquired Cardiac Diseases and Their Challenges
This real time session will describe anesthesia, analgesia, and support drug therapy that the veterinarian may prescribe for the cardiac patient with acquired cardiac diseases. Attendees will learn how to design a monitoring plan to enhance the safety of the cardiac patient while anesthetized.

Week 4 (Real Time Session May 22): Case Scenarios for the Cardiac Patient
This real time session will cover monitoring and data interpretation of the cardiac patient under anesthesia and use this information to further enhance patient safety due to complications that may arise during a procedure. Attendees will work through step by step to troubleshoot issues that may occur with patients with cardiac compromise.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.
