Level and Prerequisites:
This
intermediate course will cover basic to advanced anesthetic techniques in exotic small mammals seen in companion animal practice such as rabbits, ferrets, Guinea pigs, chinchillas, and small rodents. Veterinary technicians will benefit from this course to enhance team medicine and patient care.
Participants in this course should have some prior clinical experience with anesthesia delivery in small companion animals such as dogs, cats, and/or exotic small mammals.

Course Description:
This course will introduce veterinary support staff to both basic and advanced anesthesia techniques which can be utilized on common exotic small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, Guinea pigs, chinchillas, and small rodents. Special equipment, drug protocol selection, monitoring techniques, catheterization, and intubation techniques will be emphasized. Advanced anesthetic techniques such as epidural anesthesia/analgesia and analgesic constant rate infusions will be discussed in detail.
Week 1 (Real Time Session September 10):
Equipment Selection for Anesthesia Delivery and Monitoring
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- discuss different monitoring equipment and their uses
- choose which equipment should be chosen for different procedures and patients
- explain how to operate and utilize multi-parameter monitoring equipment.
Week 2 (Real Time Session September 17):
Physical Examination Techniques & Anesthesia Drug Selection for Premedication, Induction, Maintenance, CRI, and Epidurals
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe proper physical exams
- discuss pharmacology of common anesthetic drugs used in companion exotic small mammals
- select drug protocols in cooperation with the veterinarian based on the unique individual needs of the patient
Week 3 (Real Time Session September 24):
In-Depth Discussion of the Usefulness of Balanced Anesthesia, Calculating CRIs, and Epidurals
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- calculate and deliver analgesic drugs using a constant rate infusion.
- explain administration of epidural drugs to a variety of exotic small mammal species
Week 4 (Real Time Session October 1):
Intubation Techniques and IV and IO Catheterization and Fluid Therapy
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- describe the techniques of and feel more confident intubating rabbits and ferrets using a variety of techniques.
- deliver and monitor inhalant anesthesia.
- demonstrate placement of intravenous and intraosseous catheters in a variety of sites and species.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia, Exotic Companion Animal) has worked for the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital since 1999, working in the companion exotics department for 10 years and currently the small animal anesthesia department where she is the supervisor. Ms. Nugent-Deal is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and is the executive secretary for the group as well as the appeals committee chair. Jody is an active member with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia having served on the nominations, credentials and appeals committees. Jody is currently a Member At Large for the AVTAA. Jody also serves on the board for CaRVTA. Ms. Nugent-Deal has lectured throughout North America since 2000 on anesthesia and various exotic animal topics. Jody has published numerous articles and book chapters for both canine/feline and exotic animal medicine and anesthesia topics. Jody is an instructor for both VSPN and VetMedTeam and she has a special interest in anesthesia, analgesia, pain management and critical care in exotics and dogs and cats. In Jody�s spare time, she loves to read, visit the ocean, run, road and mountain bike.
