Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is for all veterinary staff and will focus on common canine and feline allergic issues seen in small animal practice.

VSPN CE Course: This course has been RACE approved for veterinary technicians only.

Course Description:
Skin conditions are one of the most common problems seen in day to day small animal practice. Some of the most frequent presenting complaints are itching, ear infections, hair loss, or 'hot spots.' Allergies are a common underlying cause for these problems. This course will give an overview of the approach to patients with these presenting complaints and then focus on the management of allergies.

This course consists of one (1) ninety (90) minute Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to

• list and recognize common differentials for itchy skin and ears.
• describe similarities and differences between the common types of allergies.
• explain how allergies are diagnosed and managed.
• use new strategies for optimal client education.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session (RTS) and are highly recommended reading PRIOR TO the RTS to enhance the single interactive session format.

About the Instructor: Thomas Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and works in both a general practice and an emergency practice in the San Francisco East Bay area. He is currently working towards becoming boarded in canine and feline practice (ABVP).

Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session March 25): Canine and Feline Allergies
Recommended reading (prior to the March 25 Real Time Session): It is recommended, though not required, that participants read the background materials for this condition in the course library
Content: We will start by discussing the common presentation of an allergic patient. The potential causes for the presenting complaint (i.e. differentials) and history taking will be discussed. The final focus will be on a description of the different types of allergies, their management, and client education.

CE CREDITS: 1.5

Tuition: $30 ($27 early bird special if enrolled by March 4, 2013).

If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course enrollment will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.
