Level and Prerequisites: This advanced course is geared toward veterinary technicians, especially those working toward their VTS in Nutrition. Participants should already have a strong grasp of basic nutrition and disease processes. The course format is that of a VINgnette where interaction in the message boards discussing case scenarios will be required to enhance the single Real Time Session. Participants should plan on this more intensive study.
The AVNT Nutrition Series is an on-going program hosted by VSPN in cooperation with the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians (AVNT) and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) to promote advanced education in animal nutrition for credentialed veterinary technicians. Candidates for Veterinary Technician Specialist-Nutrition (VTS-Nutrition) through AVNT are eligible for education credit as specified by the AVNT credential requirements found at http://nutritiontechs.org. Courses are offered monthly except in June and December.
VSPN CE Course: Open to VIN and VSPN members. This course has been approved for veterinary technicians only.
This VINgnette will focus on pet food labels and what is required on a package and what is marketing. We will discuss AAFCOs role in pet food labels and what can and cannot be on a pet food label. We will follow the development of the packaging for a new prototype food, Healthy Pet, made by Vet Tech Foods, by reviewing the eleven AAFCO regulations and other information that may be regulated or may be marketing.
This course consists of one (1) ninety (90) minute Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

- assess and compare AAFCO and other organizations and their role with pet food label regulations.
- critique and explain the eleven AAFCO regulations.
- explain what is required and what is marketing on a pet food label.

About the Instructor: Vicky Ograin has been an RVT for 28 years, is a published author and speaker on nutrition. She is on the organizing committee of the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians. She has a master's in business administration, sits on many state boards, and is on the executive board of NAVTA. In 2011 she was awarded California RVT of the year.
Week 1 (Real Time Session January 25): Pet Food Labels
Required Reading (prior to January 25 Real Time Session): Chapter 8- 9, page 157 - 206
Content: There is a lot of misunderstanding regarding what is required on a pet food label and what is marketing. We will follow the development of the packaging for a new prototype food, Healthy Pet made by Vet Tech foods. We will discuss who develops pet food label recommendations and requirements and how pet food labels are regulated. We will discuss the 11 regulations as well as some marketing that may be found on a pet food package.

- Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
