Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is designed to provide the veterinary technician with in-depth, useable knowledge on how to perform a urinalysis, as well as information about factors that affect accuracy of results. This course is highly recommended prior to taking The Complete Urinalysis Module 2. Technical aspects of performing a urinalysis will NOT be covered in the next module.

Course Description:
Urinalysis is most accurate when performed soon after sample collection. Veterinarians often rely on veterinary technicians to perform this analysis. This course is designed to provide the veterinary technician with in-depth, useable knowledge on how to perform a urinalysis, as well as information about factors that affect accuracy of results. The skills covered in this class are best learned by the team of the veterinarian and veterinary technician in an effort to work together in finding all diagnostics accurately and combining them to aid the veterinarian in formulating a diagnosis.

Week 1 (Real Time Session October 9): How to Perform a Urinalysis and the Effects of Sample Collection
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 2 (Real Time Session October 16): Microscopic Evaluation of Urine Sediment
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 3 (Real Time Session October 23): Review of Urine Sediment Abnormalities
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructors:
Cheryl Stockman, MT (ASCP) is a registered medical technologist and Laboratory Manager of Clinical Pathology at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine located in North Grafton, Massachusetts. Prior to her employment with Tufts University, Ms. Stockman worked as a bench technologist in two human hospital laboratories, concentrating in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis and radioimmunoassay (RIA). For over 25 years, she also worked in many capacities in several veterinary practices, lending additional understanding to the cultures and practices of the veterinary world. Ms. Stockman has spent all of her career as a medical technologist sharing her skills with medical technology students, veterinary students and veterinary professionals. Contact:

Joyce Knoll, VMD, PhD, DACVP has been overseeing veterinary clinical pathology testing and teaching veterinary students at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine for 25 years. She has been involved in curriculum development and innovative teaching, and is currently the school�s interim Dean. Contact information:

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
