Course Information:
Viktor Frankle said it so clearly; "That which is to give light must endure burning". We have watched so many talented and devoted caregivers in our field give up and leave our field because of compassion fatigue and burnout. Our Compassion Fatigue prevention training is designed to help you recapture your sense of purpose, joy, and hope as an animal care professional. Our training will provide evidence-based professional resiliency skills to help you manage the stress and emotional demands of your work. This course is appropriate for veterinary care professionals at any stage of their career, working in all areas of our profession.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • Explain the differences between Compassion Fatigue and Burnout
  • Utilize the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and understand your unique score
  • Identify the warning signs of Compassion Fatigue and Burnout
  • Discuss the 9 steps for treatment of Burnout
  • Discuss the 10 characteristics of healthy team culture
  • Discuss the Headington Institute stress test
  • Explain how to build a 3-sided framework to support the growth of healthy team members
  • Utilize Taming the Dragon- a team communication and stress management tool
  • Discuss Professional Venting to power down your team’s pressure cooker
  • Discuss the Professional Quality of Life test (the Pro-Quol), take the test
  • Explain the way your Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, and Trauma scores affect your life experiences both inside and outside of your work
  • Learn the 10 things to do every day, to care for yourself in the face of difficult work
  • Learn the symptoms of secondary traumatic stress
  • Understand and recognize Intrusive Symptoms
  • Understand and recognize Avoidance Symptoms
  • Understand and recognize Arousal Symptoms
  • Learn the 4 steps to Wellness
  • Develop your customized Compassion Fatigue Protection Toolkit
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinarians, veterinary technicians/technologists.

RACE Accreditation: This program has been approved for 7.5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval. (20-920761)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 13): Compassion Fatigue, I Hear There’s a Vaccine for That!
In this session, we will learn the differences between Compassion Fatigue and Burnout. Recognize the synergy between CF and Burnout. Score yourself in Copenhagen Burnout Inventory. Identify your unique warning signs of CF and Burnout and learn the 9 steps to authentic and sustainable self-care.

Week 2 (Real Time Session Saturday 20): Building a Healthy Team
In tonight’s session we will learn the Ten characteristics of agile, healthy team culture. Become comfortable using the Headington Institute Stress test. Learn to use Doctors Saakvinte and Pearlman’s Nature of the Work, Nature of the Patient, and Nature of the Helper framework to achieve greater effectiveness and job satisfaction. We will also learn and practice the Taming the Dragon exercise, and the Four steps of Professional Venting. Take home bonus; 10 activities that you can use to infect your team with positivity.

Week 3 (Real Time Session Saturday 27): Compassion Fatigue Testing, Find Your Baseline to Keep Your Career on Course
Tonight, we will take the ProQol Professional Quality of Life test. Score your test. Understand your level of Compassion Satisfaction. Understand your level of Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress and its impact on your career and home life and be able to use your test results to direct your self-care while safeguarding yourself and your practice.

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 4): Compassion Fatigue Prevention, The Mental Stuff to Fireproof Your Career
In this session, you will understand and begin to practice Self Regulation. Recognize and apply your personal Covenant to Intentional Living. Recognize how Perceptual Maturation and Self-Validation strengthen your ability to live with integrity. Recognize the importance of connection and begin to build your wolf pack and turn the spotlight onto your own self-care.

strong>Week 5 (Real Time Session October 11): Preventing Secondary Traumatization and Practice-Associated PTSD in Real Life Situations
In our final session we will learn the symptoms of secondary traumatic stress. Recognize your unique CF warning signs. Learn the 4 steps to wellness and be able to build your own CF Protection Toolkit for yourself.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

    2. Veterinary support staff must be VSPN members in order to enroll in a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.

    2. Only VIN and VSPN members can enroll in a VSPN CE course.
    3. Veterinarians will only receive credit for those VSPN CE courses that specify in the Accreditation statement that the course is accredited for veterinarians.
