Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a practice session prior to the first RTS. Times and dates will be listed in your course confirmation email. Expect to spend up to 1 hour at one of the 2-4 practice sessions held prior to the first RTS.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course is focused towards all veterinary staff and applies veterinary medical terminology into clinical practice use. A course in Veterinary Medical Terminology basics is a recommendation prior to taking this course. VSPN CE course: This course is RACE approved for veterinary technicians only and VHMA approved for CVPM credits

Course Description:
Clear communication is an important part of daily life in any veterinary practice.    Proper use of medical terminology adds precision to records, enhances client education, and assists communication between all members of the veterinary team.  This course expands on the concept of breaking down medical terms into their component prefixes, suffices and roots to aid in definition.  Rather than considering terminology in a system by system view of the animal, this class will approach terminology from the viewpoint of the different areas and functions within a veterinary practice to allow application of terminology in a clinical setting. Procedures, techniques, diagnostics, diseases and treatments will be covered; however, this is a terminology course and will not branch into the physiology of various diseases and conditions. The approach to this class will include a few case studies that will be used all 4 sessions to get a working knowledge of how terminology is applied throughout the veterinary practice. These will be primarily companion animal cases. We will follow the progress of four animals from initial exam, through rule outs, diagnostics, and treatment.

This course will consist of four (4) Real Time Sessions of ninety (90) minutes each, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to be considered for a course certificate of completion.

** The lecture portion of this course will combine both text and audio presentation.  Please be prepared to listen.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to

• decode and define medical terms and decipher their meaning based on root words, prefixes and suffixes.
• demonstrate correct use of medical terms and effectively communicate with staff and clients for a patient’s clinical signs, symptoms, diagnostics, diagnosis and treatments.
• associate medical terms as they relate to the tasks and responsibilities in veterinary practice.
• define and apply terms for surgical procedures, treatments, diagnostics, diseases, and conditions

About the Instructor: Barb Burri is an adjunct faculty member at Great Bay Community College in their veterinary technology program. In addition to this course, Barb has been a long time member of VSPN and teaches several other VSPN CE courses.

Course Outline:  
Week 1: (Real Time Session November 27): Medical Terms in the Exam Room
Content:  From signalment to SOAP to plan, terms covering parts of the physical exam, exam room procedures, symptoms, signs, and assessments will be covered.

Week 2: (Real Time Session December 4): Medical Terms for Diseases and Conditions
Content: Various disease and condition terms will be covered, including terminology used in client education to explain these conditions.

Week 3: (Real Time Session December 11): Diagnostics, Laboratory and Pharmacy terms
Content: This week’s terminology will include diagnostic tests and procedures, laboratory tests and pharmacy terms used in clinical practice.

Week 4: (Real Time Session December 18):  Surgery, Procedures and Treatments
Content:  This week will cover terms for different surgical and non-surgical procedures as well as various treatments.  These terms cover tasks that take place in the surgical suite and the treatment areas of the practice.

CE CREDITS: 6

Tuition: $120 ($108 early bird special if enrolled by November 6, 2012).
* Students currently enrolled in and taking at least 2 classes or 5 units at an AVMA accredited or CAAHT approved Veterinary Technician Program may be eligible to receive a 50% discount off the regular rate for this course (upon verification of student status).
* To ensure participants are ready and prepared for classes, enrollment will close when the maximum number of participants is reached or at 5pm ET the day of the first Real Time Session unless otherwise noted. If the first Real Time Session is on a weekend, course will close on the Friday before the first Real Time Session.

1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
