This
basic course is geared toward new grads looking for practical guidance
as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of small animal general practice.
It may also serve as a review for more experienced practitioners or as an introduction
for those transitioning from other practice areas. There are no prerequisites.
VIN CE Course: Open to ALL recent grads and VIN members.

Course Information:
This course is the first of a multiple module series designed to give an
overview of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice.
Different topics will be presented each week, and each discussion will
include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials,
diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where
appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.

- understand common vaccine preventative protocols for dogs and cats
- communicate with clients regarding behavior and nutrition
- field common questions from clients
Week 2 (Real Time Session December 3, 2018):
Common Presentations - Part I (Eyes and Ears)

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common Ophthalmic and Otic presentations seen in everyday practice
- give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans
Week 3 (Real Time Session December 10, 2018):
Common Presentations - Part II (GI/Dermatology)

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common GI and Dermatologic presentations seen in everyday practice
- give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans
Week 4 (Real Time Session December 17, 2018):
Client Communications
Presenter: Susan Cohen, DSW
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand common causes of compassion fatigue
- communicate with clients regarding money, euthanasia and compliance
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenters:
Susan Cohen is a Social Worker specializing in the Human-Animal Bond.
She spent 28 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York and now works as a
consultant assisting veterinary practices with issues of communication, stress, and morale.
Thomas Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of
Veterinary Medicine and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary
Practitioners (Canine and Feline Practice). He is in general and emergency
practice in the San Francisco East Bay Area. His favorite areas of practice
are internal medicine, emergency medicine, and ultrasound.
Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of Veterinary
Medicine and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in private practice,
Dr. Darby became a board-certified specialist in avian medicine in 2003 and has
owned Seneca Falls veterinary hospital since 2006.
