Course Information:
The microbiome is now implicated in a variety of gastrointestinal and extra-gastrointestinal diseases. Understanding this area, appreciating how to evaluate it and knowing when/how to manipulate it is therefore becoming a crucial tool. This course will outline our current understanding of the role of the microbiome in human and animal disease and outline the various routes of manipulation.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • understand what the microbiome is and how it can be evaluated.
  • understand current evidence on the role of the microbiome in disease.
  • know when we might need to consider the microbiome and how to practically evaluate it.
  • understand the various methods of manipulation including the use of diet, probiotics, antibiotics and fecal transplantation.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VIN CE course is open for enrollment to veterinarians actively interested in the microbiome.
Accreditation: This course is approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit by RACE for veterinarians. (RACE 20-896591)
