Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in the diagnosis and management of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Course Information:
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a life-threatening complication in diabetic dogs and cats. To be able to effectively reverse the severe metabolic aberrations that result, it is necessary to identify underlying disease(s) that have triggered DKA and immediately set up a treatment protocol to stabilize the most life-threatening consequences of the DKA. Then, plans must be made for effective monitoring of your interventions. There are expected and predictable findings in DKA, but also unexpected complications that must be quickly identified and responded to. This course will equip you in dealing with the expected and unexpected, in order to create a successful outcome.

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 24, 2019): Diagnosis of Diabetic Ketoacidosis in Dogs and Cats

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • educate owners how to recognize what circumstances can lead to DKA and when their pet needs hospitalization
  • identify the difference between a 'healthy' ketotic animal and an animal sick with DKA
  • identify the major metabolic aberrations in DKA
Week 2 (Real Time Session July 31, 2019): Management and Prevention of DKA
Presenter: Sherri Wilson, DVM, ACVIM SAIM
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
  • set up the initial treatment protocol in a DKA patient
  • identify which parameters need to be monitored and how often they should be monitored
  • identify when an animal is sufficiently recovered to be discharged

About the Presenter:
Sherri Wilson began her training in endocrinology as a student at UC Davis. During her residency, also at UC Davis, she was mentored by Dr. Ed Feldman, gaining an appreciation from him for the power of logical thinking about clinical cases. Dr. Sherri Wilson has been in small animal private practice as an internal medicine specialist for 3 decades. She has consulted for VIN since 1995, working full-time for VIN for the past 10 years, primarily answering endocrine questions. One of Dr. Wilson's own dogs was diabetic for many years, which opened her eyes to the challenges owners face in having a diabetic pet.
