Course Information:
Elevations in liver enzymes are commonly encountered in general practice. The diagnostic approach can be complex because of the many diseases that can cause these laboratory abnormalities. The proper diagnosis is crucial in determining the prognosis and optimum treatment plan. This 2-hour lecture will discuss the differential diagnoses for elevated liver enzymes in dogs, which tests are most useful for diagnosis, when to do which tests, and how to formulate a treatment plan.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the participant should be able to
  • list differential diagnoses for elevated liver enzymes in dogs including extra hepatic as well as hepatic diseases.
  • explain the pros and cons of different diagnostic tests such as bile acids, ultrasound, FNA, and biopsy and more importantly know when to perform which tests.
  • come up with an appropriate treatment plan based on the findings of diagnostic tests.
