Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists actively interested in canine and feline nutrition.

Course Description:
This course is intended to review tools used in nutrition practice, as well as basic principles of canine and feline nutrition. This two-hour course will focus on nutritional assessment tools, differences between canine and feline nutrition, a brief overview of pet food label interpretation, and a discussion of dietary options for dogs and cats.

Course Outline:

Module 1: Introduction
Total Time: 32 minutes

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Review the importance of nutrition in canine and feline practice
  • Discuss the importance of the nutritional assessment process

Module 2: Nutritional Status
Total Time: 32 minutes
Video/Polls: 32 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Discuss methods of assessing the nutritional status of a patient
  • Review calculations that assist in making a nutritional recommendation

Module 3: Dietary Options
Total Time: 30 minutes
Videos/Polls: 30 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Discuss dietary options for dogs and cats
  • Review the unique nutritional specificities of cats

Module 4: Pet Food
Total Time: 51 minutes
Videos/Polls: 31 minutes
End of Course Test: 20 minutes
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • Discuss the basics of pet food labeling
  • Understand the limitation of the information on a bag or can of pet food

About the Presenter:
Catherine Lenox graduated from veterinary school at the University of Missouri in 2007. She then went on to complete a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Colorado State University and a veterinary nutrition residency at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. She was board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in 2011. Dr. Lenox is also certified in veterinary acupuncture. After three years in specialty practice, Dr. Lenox joined Royal Canin USA in 2014. She is currently Regulatory Veterinary Manager at Royal Canin USA.
