Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course will be open to veterinarians actively interested in an overview of small animal infectious disease, immunology, ophthalmology, coagulation and hematology information. This course is the sixth and final module in the Organ System Pathophysiology and ABVP Core Examination review series. The MULT207-1018: Pathologic Basis of Disease and the MULT208-0219: Principles of Medicine courses are recommended prerequisites.

Course Information:
The sixth of six modules in the Organ System Pathophysiology and ABVP Core Examination review series, this course is designed to cover the pathophysiological basis of disease in small animals based on pathophysiological and discipline-specific concepts. Clinical examples will be used to illustrate these concepts.

The course can be used as a portion of the preparation for the ABVP Core examination, but it is not designed as a test-preparation course. The instructors do not have access to the questions. Also, material in this course may be more current than that examination. However it will allow those preparing for the examination to work systematically through different topics over the course of a year, accomplishing a broad review. The emphasis will be on pathophysiology, serving as a foundation for good case management.

It should be noted that these courses are not designed specifically as a preparation for test taking. The instructors do not have access to information on the question types. Furthermore, the questions used on the examination may be a few years behind the current knowledge and practice, whereas the course will strive to be more current. We recommend using the course to:
  1. keep progressing through the topics so all topics will have been studied prior to the exam and
  2. provide participants with feedback on their strongest and weakest topics to guide their individual exam specific preparations.

Weeks 1-2 (Real Time Session February 13 and 20, 2020): Ophthalmology

Week 3 (Real Time Session February 27, 2020): Immunology

  • understand the basic mechanisms of the innate and adaptive immune responses.
  • understand the role of the immune system in vaccine responses.
  • understand the role of the immune system in neoplasia.

Week 4 (Real Time Session March 5, 2020): Hematology

  • understand how to evaluate a blood smear.
  • understand normal erythrocyte, platelet and leukocyte morphology.
  • recognize common poikilocytosis (shape abnormalities) and their potential causes.
  • understand the difference between toxic change and a left shift.

Weeks 7-9 (Real Time Session April 2, 9, and 16, 2020): Infectious Disease

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to

  • better understand the pathophysiologic basis of disease of the infectious disease body systems.
  • apply the pathophysiological basis of disease to generate better and complete differentials for problems.
  • apply the pathophysiological basis of disease to improve case management.

About the Presenters:
Stacey Hoffman received her DVM from Ohio State University in 1992. She did an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital and a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine.

Melissa A. Kennedy did everything at University of Tennessee - born and bred a hillbilly, and that is true. DVM in 1983, practiced for 5 years in Small Animal Medicine; came back to school in 1988, PhD in 1991. Did a residency in Microbiology for 2 years, boarded by ACVMicro - Virology and Immunology in 1995 and Bacteriology in 1997. She stayed on at UT as an instructor. She is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Clinical Virology Lab at UTCVM. She teaches, directs diagnostics, and does research, mainly on feline viruses.

Amanda Guth received her PhD in Immunology from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center while studying the role of B cell antibody mutation in autoimmune disease. She went on to get her DVM from Colorado State University while concurrently doing research in understanding the cellular composition of airways in the lung. Following completion of her DVM, Amanda did her post-doctorate research studying the role of innate immunity in impeding antitumor immunity. Amanda is now an Assistant Professor at CSU, where she is currently working on developing novel immunotherapies for cancer in dogs and humans, including therapeutic vaccine development.

Stephanie Smith received her DVM from Purdue University in 1988. She did an internship at the University of Illinois, and a residency in small animal internal medicine at Kansas State University where she also received an MS. She is a diplomate of the ACVIM. She served on the clinical faculty at the University of Minnesota Veterinary teaching Hospital, and then did a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois - College of Medicine. She is currently a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, School of Cellular and Molecular Biology, at the University of Illinois, where her research focuses on the biochemical mechanisms of hemostasis and thrombosis. She also continues to investigate clinical issues in hemostasis and thrombosis in veterinary patients. She serves as a peer reviewer for a variety of journals and on the scientific review committee of the ACVIM Foundation, and has published more than 10 book chapters, 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and hundreds of research abstracts.

Michael Zigler received his DVM from Ontario Veterinary College in 1979. He did a residency in Veterinary Ophthalmology at Toronto North Veterinary Referral Services and received his Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology (CertVOphthal) from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1993. He was also past president of the Canadian Association of Veterinary Ophthalmology and the American Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology. He was also selected as Veterinarian of the Year in 1988 by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association.

Bob Munger received his DVM from Texas A&M University in 1973. He did an internship in Large Medicine and Surgery at the University of California, Davis. He also did a residency in Large Animal Medicine and one in Ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis. He received his diplomate from the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 1979.

Rebekah Gunn-Christie is a board certified clinical pathologist with a special interest in cytology and hematology. She has been a diagnostic pathologist with Antech Diagnostics since 2007, and is also a consultant with Veterinary Information Network and an Assistant Adjunct Professor at North Carolina State University. Dr. Gunn-Christie has lectured on cytology and hematology at numerous continuing education events/conferences.
